I've shot plenty of grouse with this combination using a recurve over the years & about 1 in ten come back to life after the shot. The arrow screams en route to the target at 200 fps so at 300 + you would likely end up with a pretty wild setup that could knock a bird down but did't kill it. Asid...

I use a Vari-zone scope on my phoenix for shots out to 70 yards. I set the scope up to shoot 305 fps & set the cross hair for 30 (10 yard mark becomes 20) so I get ranges out to 60 yards. For 70 yards I turn the scope down to the 260 fps setting and use the bottom mark. This puts me right on at ...

Observations on 07 crossbows seen at the Toronto show

So I couldn't resist & went down to the sportsman show to check out the new offerings, here's my first impresions on some of the crossbows on the market. Middleton - not sure why you would go this way if you can compare side by side with excal. Cool loking limbs but the fit & finish isn't up...

A few interesting thing based on their add. They don't list mass weight so I'll bet its heavy. Why wouldn't you try to shorten the width if your starting from scratch? Even two inches narrower and you have at least a percieved advantage over excal. The string stompers are a good idea - I have them o...

I think most of the guys posting about fletching are refering to the 2 inch Blazer. Its a bit different from conventional fletches because it seems to be alot stiffer. I compared 4 & 5 inch feathers and vanes with the 2 inch stiffer Blazers and was really impressed with the Blazers. I'm abit sur...

North bay dude, A couple of things you can easily do if you want to avoid a run in with a bear. 1. Get a list of all the rural dumps in your area and stay at least 10km away - dumps cause high concentrations of bold bears in northern ontario & all though generally fearfull this can cause a great...

One thing to concider is that the thumbhole isn't always an advatage. I've got a wood stock with a thumbhole and it's a bit of a pain in the butt to flip the safety off if a deer is aproching (took some time to get comfortable with this process)

If going west in canada Southwestern Alberta is realy the spot for fly fishing. The bow river that runs through calgary is amazing and fairly easy to figure out. It's famous for lots of big browns & bows. Head south from calgary and into the Oldman and Crowsnest watersheads (about a 3 hour drive...

One other thing. I think overall loudness is improtant in reducing the chance of a string jump but I also think frequency is just as important if not more critical. There are very few if any high pitched loud noises in the deer woods. There are lots of loud noises, branches falling, small animals cr...

Interesting results! Thanks for sharing them with the group. Just a theory here... Looking at your graph the noise a crossbow makes could be broken down into two componets. Sound during the shot & sound after. Sound during, I suspect this volume comes primarily from the friction created when the...

Matthias,
Cool results!

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out quanties based on your scale.

It looks like your system shows about a 20% reduction in total loudness? Is this interpretation right?

It also looks like the sound disipates quicker (has a shorter duration) Is this an acurate finding?

Intresting result comfybear - i would have expected a bigger improvement in speed - i'll bet you will see it improve after the break in period. Bill-T, My thoughts are that I've tried alot of different stuff to improve on an already great product. -It's difficult to get a noticeable gain whe you are...

Tye, I tried these strips and didn't notice much of a result. When I had a factory stock I pulled it off the bow and filled the voids under the rail with silicone and noticed a better improvement. I also pulled the cap off the pistol grip and filled the void with cut up inner tube. This seemed to ma...

ComfyBear - great thread, I agree home serving sure extends the life of a string. A few questions if you don't mind - I've concidered making a string for quite a while. Have you crono'ed the bow to see what improvement is speed you get? How many strands did you go with (22 or 24)? Which particular (...

Speed at long range is somewhat dependant on fetch type however is you use excaliber's data from there site, the 225 fps example with a 400 gr arrow would still provide plenty of kinetic energy (37 foot pounds) to shoot clean through any whitetail. The rule of thumb for whitetails has traditionally ...
