Ditto to all the above, but the last few years the most important items have been: pillow blanket alarm clock Haven't figured out how to fit them in my pack yet, but these seem to be the items I need most. Something about a late afternoon nap snuggled up to the base of a red oak that I can't resist....

I'm with Cossack.

My Dad has those same values, Ray and he has passed them down to me. He's 92 and over the years he's given me a lot of good advice. One of my favorites is

"Always leave the other guy owing you."

I try to follow it daily.

You're right it is a beautiful place. We used to camp on Big Island and spend the our time fishing from McCleans (sp?) Bay all the way to the Narrows. I caught and released some very nice walleyes and bass. (We'd only keep what we could eat while we were there.) I've never been there in the fall, we...

Thanks JRS. Tumblehome Lodge is the one I was thinking of. Sounds like the lake has pretty much stayed the same since I was last there (1989). I owe my wife a trip to the ocean, but I think the trip after tht will be to Crotch Lake. Interesting to see there is a new lodge there as well. I'll have to...

Thanks Digger, I did a quick check of the link and while I found Crotch Lake I didn't find anything about a lodge there. I'll have to keep looking. I have many fond memories of my vacations in Canada. There's something to be said for getting up early in the morning walking to the water's edge, makin...

O/T Crotch Lake, Ontario

Since a number of you guys are from Ontario I thought I'd ask you a question. A number of years ago, my annual vacation consisted of a one -two week camping and fishing trip to Ontario at Crotch Lake. Did that for seventeen years! Then I got married  I remember the closest town was a place call...

Kev, The Luhr Jensen company is located in Oregon I believe. They're primarily known for their fishing lures which they manufacture there. I'm not sure where the smokers are made. A quick email to the company should reveal the answer. As far as the smoker is concerned their beauty is in their simpli...

Wabi, I know what you mean about the venison. I have the same problem. I've made venison sweet sausage and venison kielbasa and I've found the best way is to mix it with another meat. I use about 60% venison and 40% pork. Venison alone makes a very dry sausage, especially if you're going to cure it ...

Kev, I'm my second Luhr Jensen. WOre out the first...no not really :D Just that my dad looked so sad when I left home with it that I had to buy another one and give the original to him. Used it to smoke everything from cheese and popcorn to homemade kielbasa. The ability to cool smoke is a big advan...

I use a Luhr Jenson top load smoker primarily because it allows me to "cool smoke" so I can do cheese.

For jerky I'm sorta with bstout, only instead of the dehydrator I use the spam oven with the temp set at 150 -200 and the door propped open about an inch.

Iagree, practice if you can. But if you can't, get one of those rubber stretch bands from your locak medical supply place. It'll help you keep those muscles in shape

Compound bow exercises

Back when I was able to hunt with compound I used one of those stretch bands that you get at physical therapy to simulate drawing the bow. I'd wrap one end around my left hand and gripping the other end with my right I'd draw it back like I was drawing a bow. I'd start doing that in July and do it f...
