Particularly for archery, it's a good idea to take your time and range objects beforehand than it is to range game right before a shot. A laser will give you a reading for the fist reflective object it hits. In the heat of the moment you are more likely to range a branch or rock instead of your targ...

Although Pheasants Forever, OFAH, and OMNR are attempting to re-introduce wild pheasant to Southern Ontario results have not been stellar. At this time the only way to hunt pheasant here is to hunt pen raised birds. Several conservation authorities like the GRCA (Grand River Conservation Authority) ...

There is a difference between coy-dogs and wild dogs. What we think of as a "wild dog" is usually a dog that was lost or cast off by it's owners and has learned how to survive in the wild. With no inherent fear of humans they are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. Then there are coy-do...

You're absolutely correct on all counts. I recently wrote a piece on "perception is reality" on my hunting blog http://www.sooutdoors.ca/hunting_blog.html . The situation you describe is exactly why I choose to hunt alone or with a couple of friends that I know extremely well.

By the way...just to get back to the original question. I use a product called Secur-Vision. I'm sure you can buy it online http://www.securvisiononline.com/ . This stuff works!

Wow Munch...How did a simple post turn into a debate on hunter ethics :( . Some like the shotgun / blackpowder hunt some don't; personally I firmly believe that - for true hunters - hunting is about the journey, not the destination. I don't participate in the shotgun hunt, but I support it. I don't ...

The less movement the better so I keep my Excal on my lap or leaning against me so I can grab it with little or not motion. I only stand if absolutely necessary; again the less motion the better. I'm right handed so I tend to sit facing towards my right. It's easier to swing to the left and requires...

I completely agree with the comments about feral cats. If I was in a more remote area it would have used up it's 9th life. It might have made a nice rug

Giant Cat

No deer this morning but I did see the biggest cat I've ever seen in my life. I had to do a double take because there have been isolated, confirmed sightings of eastern Cougar in Southwest Ontario over the past few years and from a distance this cat certainly had the right colouration and a tail tha...

I usually hunt from the ground and generally use brush for concealment. I find that this gives me flexibility to quickly change plans depending on the wind.

Much easier than setting up multiple tree stands.

The folding bow holder works OK but because of the horizontal design of crossbows I find it more cumbersome. Personally I keep mine in my lap.

I agree with WABI. A severe storm that takes down a lot of trees will definately change patterns. Deer are like people, they look for the path of least resistance and if there are a lot of deadfalls on the trail they will simply look for an easier way through. This often completely and permanently c...

I'll actually be doing a bit in the Tobermory area next week :) . I don't do a lot of geocaching on a regular basis but I do find that when I'm on vacation it gets me into a lot of really neat places that I would never have seen otherwise. I've also discovered some great access to public hunting lan...
