bstout, You're right about that. The 6-point I killed opening day I hit way back. So far back that the arrow exited through the front of the opposite hind quarter. I got lucky though and hit a major artery. The buck only went about 75 yards. He was down quicker than yesterdays' double-lunged 9-point...

Good luck with the recovery. I had the same issue last year. I needed to give him a few hours, but rain rolled in within an hour. It rained hard for at least 8 straight hours. If your area regulations allow it, bring a dog along. A dogs' nose can see far better than our eyesight. Just walk downwind ...

Successful morning
It was a nice 50 degree morning in Northern Virginia when I went out today. Wind was initially calm, but picked up about 8am. By 9am I had seen nothing but a truckload of squirrels so I decided to hit the ground and slip up onto the next ridge to check for buck sign. My ridge has plenty of rubs, but...

I cock my Exomax all the time in every stand I hunt in. I prefer to cock it in advance of climbing the tree, but it is easy in a stand. Most stands with a shooting rail don't offer enough room to get the crossbow down to your feet. Just hand the crossbow over the side and bring the stock up butt fir...

Although we are in a serious drought this year in my area and we have a high population of deer, I don't think it has affected the herd one bit. The acorn crop in my area did rather well considering the circumstances. Both deer I've taken this year have had lots of fat on them so food has not been a...

Woody, For the story on my three misses Friday morning look for the post titled 'Ever empty your quiver in one hunt?'. While I was moving a hang on stand Friday afternoon I heard the tell tale clucking. I was up the tree and my crossbow was on the ground. I climbed back down but they never got close...

A miss will happen to all of us eventually and for varying reasons. Once an animal gets over 30 yards judging distance gets much tougher and more important. Toss in the fact that a turkey is smaller and you've got a real challenge. If it makes you feel any better, I had 3 (yes 3) misses yesterday mo...

Yep, about 75 yards is the farthest I've had one go. Many don't make it that far. About half don't seem to make it out of sight. I have noticed that if you hit any of the shoulder bone they tend to move out quicker and thus make it a little farther. In those cases I've had them make it 150 yards. Tr...

Ever empty your quiver in one deer hunt?
Today was a lot more interesting than yesterday. I sat in the same stand in hopes of seeing the doe and two young'uns that passed by at 7:30am yesterday. They didn't show up so at 9:00am I decided to get down and move my stand for the evening hunt. Then the fun began. I put away my rangefinder. I di...

Thats why they call it hunting.
Yesterday was frustrating. Strike 1) I had a big doe and two yearlings walk within 25 steps at 7:30am and I didn't get a shot. I could have shot a young'un but really wanted the doe. Strike 2) As I was walking out about 9:30am I had a deer out of nowhere come running through the woods and run up beh...
