I'd look for a used 870 or 1100. They just don't break. Spend the savings on a cantelivered scope mount slug barrel. Hastings makes a nice one. There is also a manufacturer whos name escapes me at the moment that makes a slug barrel in the faster twist. The faster twist is needed in many cases to ac...

I won't sit in a stand all day unless there is a good reason to do so. No use sitting all day only to see does and lesser bucks come through. You need to stay mobile to locate a nice one. Still hunting is the answer to cold feet. I carry hand clippers with me to work my way through thickets. It's qu...

I live on the outskirts of a small town (Bentonville, Va.). We don't have a stop light but the the speed limit through town does drop from 55 to 45. It consists of about 10 houses. I have neighbors but I can't see them. My farm backs up to the Shenandoah National Park and the nights are black, the s...

Im in the process of becoming one. I've got a Kenwood 820S and put in a 1/4 wavelength long wire. Still need to put up my Gegi. I just listen right now but will go and get certified sometime in the next couple of months. I don't know how well my unit will reach out west or east of me as I have my wi...

O/T Saw the cutest thing Sat night
I came out of the woods Saturday night and right across the street from where I parked my truck are two farm houses. There were a passel of kids out in the yard stringing something up on their meat pole. I hung around to see what it was. There were squeals of delight as the lights came on. They had ...

Leaving him alone and not pushing him was the right idea I think. A gut shot deer can travel a very long distance and chances are you would never find him. On the other hand, given the time to lay up, the wound might close up and then you woudn't be able to trail him. Hopefully an artery was nicked ...

Very nice. I'd love to display my stuff but due to regular burglerys, I have to keep everything out of site and locked up. I've been hit quite a few times and even though the cops have caught some of them I have been unable to retrieve any of my stolen property. The cops story is that because they a...

It's OK to pass on those lesser 8 pointers, just remember where you saw them for next year. The eight you pass up this year maybe the 10 point trophy you bag next time. It's nice to end the day saying you could have got three 8 pts. but let them walk. Im doing OK with the bigger deer and thats becau...

Our deer have been fairly easy to pattern in that they all seem to travel 30 to 40 yards inside the thick stuff along side the open areas (open oaks and/or clear cuts). It is a regular parade of deer for the first couple of hours each morning. They won't step foot in the open areas if they can avoid...

Fast twist barrels
I'd look into getting one of the new fast twist barrels for your 870. They will shoot the Platinum tip and Partition Gold which have tremendous muzzle velocity (200 yd groups). You can't shoot them out of the standard twist factory or Hasting barrels. You can but your shots will be all over the pape...

O/T: Heavyest deer on record?
Anyone know what the heavey weight record is? I seem to remember a 600 lb deer from New York State. It sure seems like that can't be right. Does anyone know? Im glad my Virginia deer arn't as big as those two that were posted. Freezers are expensive and those deer would for sure eliminate the desire...
