The purpose of the second amendment to our constitution to keep and bare arms wasn't written for deer hunters. It's purpose was for the country's citizens to be well enough armed to over throw a tyranical government if need be. As more and more of our individual rights vanish for the sake of politic...

I just got back from a one week cruise in the carribean. It was 85 F and humid. I'll take cold weather over hot anyday. Expecting 1 to 3 inches of snow tomorrow, Yipee! PS: Everyone here looks so pale and sickly.

Not sure but I think Virginia prohibits bringing some parts of a deer into the state. This includes meat and hides but I think a mounted head is okay. Some states prohibit any animal or part there of to be brought in. This is due to the spread of CWD. West Virginia now has CWD and Virginia doesn't w...

I once used some kind of mineral block I got at the feed store and the deer and bear really went at it. Same for those little apple block ones that are shaped like bricks. I couldn't get either one for the past several months so I purchased the salt block (brown) with trace minerals in it they use f...

Range finders

Do those range finders with the hold over/under footages really work. You know what I mean. If Im sitting in my tree stand at 15 ft. and the target is out 40 yards then I should use say the 30 yard pin. Anyone have any experience with them?

The whistle is a good idea as someone mentioned. It sure does help if someone is looking for you. My hunting group carries them and it's a real help if you are trying to guide one of your buddies in to help you drag a deer out. My whistle produces an ear splitting noise that can be heard from a long...

I know the stuff your talking about Grizz. Fortunately I don't have any of that stuff where I live or hunt. Dismal Swamp, Va. is kind of like that in that everything looks the same but it's still not as thick as the stuff your talking about. We call that kind of terrain "Shiggy" but I don'...

It's not shameful to get turned around. It happens to just about everybody. I once shot a nice buck and hawled it back to my truck. I took my shotgun and muzzel loader out of the back and laid it on the ground along with my bow to load up the deer. Two hours later I got home with the deer only to re...

O/T Lost in the woods

Anyone have any tales of being lost out hunting? I seem to run across one or two hunters every year who are lost. They're usually soaked in sweat and have been double timing it for some time. Some are even as much as five miles away from where they started. I always carry a compass with me and will ...

Thank you all for your kind words. I am not a hero though. A hero is someone who I would say - rushes into a burning building to save the baby thus risking his own personal safety. I didn't do anything like that. A good Samaritan maybe but I didn't do anything more then any of the rest of you would ...

O/T Found a kid near death

I took advantage of the nice weather last Wednesday night and went out for a run along the power lines and through the forest. It's about -5F below with the wind chill, 10:30pm, moonless, and the ground was nothing but solid ice from our last ice storm. Im going along and I hear this faint help, hel...

I was quoteing an article I had read in a magazine from some renown shotgun expert. I'll try and find it to tell you who said it. He went on about how just a millimeter or whatever of difference in a choke could make all the difference in the pattern. The bottom line was still "try as many chok...

This is just great (not). Canadian, British, and Australian laws concerning firearms are constantly promoted here in the US in how these countries took the necessary steps to insure the saftey of their citizens by registering and then ultimately banishing private ownership. Did Canada sign on with t...

A very poignant statement Grizz. Maybe your feelings and mine are related to age. The new geberation will never be able to appreciate what a fine wood stock or hand carved wood decoy is to behold.

The proof is always in the pudding. Coose your shot and pattern the gun. I have a collection of super tight turkey chokes that can't match the full choke that came with the barrel. Keep in mind what a choke does. It's designed to seperate the plastic thingy (wadding) from the shot. Every gun/choke w...
