Welcome to the forum. The bolt should be seated up against the string with the bow cocked. There should be some pressure from the retaining spring as this holds the bolt in place, even when the crossbow is pointed downward. Shouldn't be really stiff, but it definitely applies some downward pressure....

I have a 1997 era Exocet 165 that I've just changed over to mag tip limbs. I believe I had the brace height set at 1-1/8 inches.
