Re: Matrix 380 arrows

When trying to decide between heavier/lighter inserts with heavier/lighter broadheads you have to decide for yourself what is more important. Slug force (the momentum to penetrate) or raw speed. The lighter arrow will give you raw speed and "at impact" more kinetic energy, but that is not ...

Re: NAP FOC

These are "really heavy" for a broadhead, coming in at 170 grains. If you are shooting relatively light arrows these will move your front of center balance quite a bit (which will help tighten up your group) but it will knock down your speed a little and you will no doubt have to re-dial i...

Re: Crossbow targets for broadheads?

Yes, I use a "block" target from Field Logic (16" square, 12" deep) and it absolutely "eats" all but the toughest broadheads. On a positive note it is perfect when I do durability testing of various broadheads - probably 60% of all that I have tested have "lost to ...

Re: Tested 5 Mechanical Broadheads

I will - I'm "hunting" the Battle Axe right now. I just looks plain "mean" :P If Bambi co-operates (and I have a pretty nice 8 pointer that I can't quite pattern coming around), I will take lot's of pictures. The one thing that I have noted at least at this point (and not a good ...

Re: I'm seeing alot of deer here in SE Wisconsin!

We had a long, nasty winter as well in Eastern Ontario. It doesn't look like it took the deer numbers down significantly (maybe the biologist dudes have a different take), but from what I have seen the year looks typical - lots of does/fawns. They did look a little scrawny in early spring but with t...

Re: Lets talk about camouflage patterns.

This may seem an odd answer but here goes - I am totally colour blind - see black/white and a bit of grayscale. I can pick out a guy dressed in camo - any pattern, you name it, when they are in the woods just the same as if they had flashing lights attached to them. I believe "camo" is a p...

Re: What does a custom string improve?

I think they just plain look cool because you can get them in different colours. Ok, they can add some speed which translates into KE, but how "dead" do you need your deer to be or how hard to you want to whack a target. I shoot a Vixen II so "every" other Excalibur offering is f...

Re: Tree rats

In Ontario Squirrels can be hunted, with a small game licence. Where I hunt deer the squirrel season is from 20 September to 15 December (pretty much the entire deer season). I have found "old bushy tail" is an outstanding way of improving your shooting skills. Once you are adept at puttin...

Re: Range Finders

What are you going to use the range finder for? That may sound like an odd question, but IF, like me, you are simply using it to measure a few distances from your stand, then like me you can use the 49 dollar one from Tasco which is bang on out to 50 yards (in 1 yard increments). I figure out where ...

Re: experienced xbow users thoughts

If you can keep the arrow on target you have more than enough "thump" to shoot completely through a moose with that set up. I took one down with my 51 lb recurve shooting a 490'ish grain arrow @ 27 yards which had a "whopping" 24 lbs of kinetic energy. Your set-up should be produ...

Re: Matrix 380 Mechanical Broadheads

I too have had good results with Rage 40 KE's from my vertical bow but didn't like the results in my crossbow so moved along. But none of that is the point. His trust in them is now shot (literally) - whether he got some bad heads, didn't set them up properly or whatever the reason. The bottom line ...

Re: Matrix 380 Mechanical Broadheads

If you are looking for a mechanical that "will not" deploy until it hits something you may want to give the "meat seekers" (by Rocket/Trophy Ridge) a try. They are available in 2 or 3 blade design and are a piston action rear deploying broadhead. The blades are kept in place with...
