Re: Excal's very loud ?????
sumner...I hear ya .... I was only trying to point out that a deer that reacts to the sound can move alot more than one might think. And yeah, 9" is alot,..... in fact I'm not even sure they need to squat down that far to get ready to run,.... but 4" or 6" is well within the realm of ...

Re: Excal's very loud ?????
Like sumner says, a deer doesn't "jump" the string. They actually duck the arrow because they have to load up the muscles in their legs to spring away, and they do this by dropping down a bit. The best case (for the deer) would be if he can drop at a rate equal to the acceleration of gravi...

Re: Excal's very loud ?????
Had 2 Horton Legends and I think my Vortex as I got it was louder. But Ijust adding a FFF string has quieted it alot and I'd put it on par with the Horton. I'm planning to video some shots of bolts with vanes and feathers (from the deer's perspective) to see if there is a difference in noise. I'll t...

Re: What Do Your Licenses Cost?
In NC the Sportsman license costs $40, and runs on an annual basis from the day you buy it and includes the Big Game Permit which gets you 6 deer (4 can be antlered) 1 bear and 2 turkeys. It used to include 2 hogs but now they are free. Also gets you all inland fishing. From memory - I think if you ...

Wabi,
That's a great idea. Some states out west require a card to get a license. I know Colorado did the last time i went after elk.

Re: FPS to MPH
Sticking with our scenario, if a deer has 0.14 seconds to react after it hears the noise, and it drops straight down (which is what they do to spring load their muscles), it would be dropping at the rate of the acceleration of gravity (best case) which is 32.15 f/s/s. The equation to use is 1/2 at^2...

Re: FPS to MPH
Not that I think you shoot at a moving deer...but this is interesting. If your arrow is going 300fps and the deer is 20 yards away, it takes your arrow 0.2 seconds to reach the deer. (actually a bit longer since the arrow is slowing down the whole time). If a deer is walking at 3 MPH he will move 10...

Re: How hard is it to......
The only "disadvantage" I can think of is that the 225 lb-ers would be a little harder on the string servings than the lower poundage bows. Probably a good idea to get a backup string or 2.

Re: Flemish string problem
I just put one on my Vortex last night and shot it today. Process was: added about 5 twists and install string - it was near the top mark within 10-15 minutes it streched 2-3 string widths (maybe more) added 5 more twists to get it near the top mark left it uncocked all night and all day added 3 twi...

Re: Excalibur for elk
Shooting uphill or downhill any weapon will shoot high. Without getting too nerdy.....sharp uphill or downhill angles result in the distance to the target being longer than the distance gravity will act on the projectile, so the POI is for the shorter distance. This link explains the physics pretty ...

Re: Need Opinions
Like most "over the top" opening mechanicals, those are a bit long, so try to find a long 125 grain FP. It helps match FOC so FPs and BHs hit the same hole.

Well the Delta is a bag target which I understand is pretty heavy and I have no idea what its stuffed with http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p155/heavyBullet/speedbag.jpg and the McKenzie is a layered foam target http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p155/heavyBullet/ShotBlocker.jpg No one in Quebec ...
