Re: Broadheads for moose

If I were going for moose I would use the same heads I used in South Africa last year. VPA 3-blade heads...150gr or 175gr. If I include my brother in-law in the count we took 13 animals up to 550lbs. All with one shot, two holes. The best part about them is you can practice with the same heads you w...

Re: What ya got for Binoculars?

I can highly recommend Nikon Monarch 7's. I have the 10x42 and used them to great affect in Africa and here during deer season. The only complaint I have is the lousy lens covers for the ocular lenses. But the optics are amazing! I just saw you have a dollar cap of $300...I think I spent +$500 for m...

Re: Back From South Africa...Report

>>woodmnctry, I had buck fever and shot that Kudu the first day. The PH's even told us to wait to day 3 so we could get an idea of size. Mine measured around 49". My brother in laws was 52" I believe. For VPA's I only use the non-vented. VERY quiet in flight...as in perfectly silent.

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer?

>>SEW, don't forget that there is an 80gr brass insert for the ZS's as well. I thought about using that insert when I was planning on using the 175gr VPA. As it was, I decided to just go with the 92gr and if I happen to use the 175gr VPA I would just have a higher FOC. I never shoot at game beyond 4...

Re: Big Buck Down...M355 Strikes Again!

>>ScareCrow, I shoot the 150gr and 175gr unvented. Perfect arrow flight from both with the 175gr being about 1.5" lower at 40yds. Used both in Africa to great affect and all would be reusable other than the two that drilled rocks after pass-thru. And those would just need a steeper bevel at the...

Re: Big Buck Down...M355 Strikes Again!

Yes, I'm definitely getting him mounted...after Africa, the wife just shook her head and said, " I knew you were going to shoot something big if you went out!". lol My taxidermist is LOVING me lately! I agree, I think this buck was just cruising and making his presence known. We have 5 tra...

Big Buck Down...M355 Strikes Again!

Had a crazy hunting session here in SE Michigan this past Sunday night. Had a weeks worth of rain and thunderstorms leading up to the season kickoff and didn't even bother going out on 10/1 due to questionable weather. Sunday was the first decent day. Upper 60's with a NW wind at about 8mph. We hunt...

Re: Dr Ashby style + micro 355 = serious deer medicine

Your experiments and outcomes mirror mine. Here is the arrow I used last year to great affect on a nice 7pt. Broadhead was a Centaur Archery Big Game, around 200gr with total arrow weight at 486gr if I recall correctly (possibly heavier). http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4/drewzintense/cdf3fa43-b2...

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer?

Re: Back From South Africa...Report

I would love to go back for Cape Buff, but not with a crossbow. I do know there are arrow weight restrictions along with overall KE restrictions. Not that a crossbow wouldn't be capable, I would just rather do it with a rifle. After watching some of the personal video's of the PH's hunts with Buff, ...

Re: Back From South Africa...Report

While there we also did a little humanitarian work. We took two huge hockey size duffel bags of supplies to the local orphanage. The bags are supplied by SCI (their Blue Bag program). My brother in-law pulled all the supplies together and we took one morning off from hunting to visit and dispense th...

Re: Back From South Africa...Report

Right now the skins, heads, etc. stay in Africa and will be shipped to a company called Skin & Dip, where they will spend the next 90 days being processed. Salted, pickled, sun dried, etc. Then a U.S. SPAM! will deal with export and import, and finally shipping to my taxidermist. So that would b...
