Not only do they have trouble zeroing in on scent, but they have the same problem detecting movement that you or I have. With leaves and branches waving around and everything seems to be in motion, it's really hard to see what my be a predator, or prey for that matter.

A butcher once told me that about 45-50% of live weight would be lost after field dressing and removing hide, head and lower legs. If the animal is boned deduct another 10-12%. Never really checked though.

O/T Muzzleloader season

I can only hunt on weekends because of my work schedule. I have been hunting for the past two weeks on public land. I have seen some deer, but have not gotten a shot YET! Tomorrow is the opener of muzzleloading season, and I have been invited to hunt on private land. I scouted the property and the l...

O/T Muzzleloader season

I can only hunt on weekend due to my work schedule. I've been out for the last two weekends, hunting public land. Have seen several deer, but have not gotten a shot yet. Muzzleloading season opens tomorrow here, and I have an invitation to hunt some private land on the opener. I was going to hunt cr...

When I got my Gold Tip shafts the instructions on the package said that you could put furniture polish on the shafts. I haven't done that, but have use Armor All with good result.

It will really surprise you how far an arrow can be launched. I once tried it with a 68# recurve in an open meadow. Shooting a very heavy arrow at about a 45 degree angle, I found the arrow about 550 paces from the orgin of the shot. The speed out of that bow with that arrow was only around 185fps s...

We are much more in peril from the predators on our city streets than we are from the predators in our woods.

I have smelled deer on occasion, but elk are real easy. During the early fall when they go into the rut, the bulls reak!! Cows have strong odor too. That coupled with the fact that they herd up makes if possible to locate elk in thick timber if you approach downwind.

Had my pick of 3 does at 8:15 this morning while hunting from a natural ground blind. Closest one about 15 yards furthest about 20. Was lining up on the largest, but didn't see the other 5 that had come in behind me. They saw me though and that was the end of that. Nothing this evening except a guy ...

I have used the gel type super glue and had no problems. You have to be quick though or the insert will stick half way in. I put and old, dull, two blade broadhead into the insert all the way before applying the glue. This gives you a handle and as I push the insert in, I twist at the same time. This...

Gary, You mentioned the plastic inserts that 10 Point makes. I got some of them and they are great for fletching, and do ok for nock ends. However, I did find that the plastic is a little soft, and if the arrow hits something solid or hard, the insert will peel and slide down inside the shaft. I was...

There is a lot of conversation here about the angle of shot from a tree stand. As many of us hunt from trees it is vitally important to learn the trajectory of the arrow from a high angle. However if you look at the first photo in Woody's post (the one that started this conversation) you will note t...

Woody, I'm no expert on deer anatomy, but I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy during the Viet Nam war, and was a member of a surgical team in that conflict. So I have seen many similar wounds on humans. The anatomy is somewhat different, but basically the same. I was also a Police officer in a met...
