Re: Ontario spring bear

Just spent a week fishing at a lodge in Ontario where some 10 bear were taken, several with crossbow. Unfortunately some of them were not much bigger than black labs. The owner charges only $1500 ea per week of hunting/fishing, and everyone filled, but I't definitely "so, I killed a bear" ...

Re: Spring hunting & black flies

I use a ghillie suit built on netting, including a facemask. Works for me, no extra smell

Re: spoiled meat

Aging has to be done in a controlled atmosphere with a (constant) temperature just above freezing. It does promote meat tenderness, because the meat is starting to break down, aka rot. The contamination you notice is likely from coliform bacteria associated with the gut. It cannot be completely elim...

Re: Archery season was too warm here in MI

Our season was very warm too. I took my eating buck when it was in mid 40's and butchered it next day, so all is well. Our rifle season opener w/e was in mid 70. So we refrained from shooting deer until later in week. All is changed now, in the midst of a full blown blizzard! That's Minnesota weather.

Looks like a youngster to me too. But hard to tell from just that shot. Would like to see belly, legs, back and, as stated, teeth to be sure.

Re: Waxed dental floss on serving?

Since I use capture nocks on some of my my arrows, the serving has to be diameter specific. For the Flemmish I make I use Angel or Halo they wear like iron. I can't imagine reserving every 30 shot. Major PITA!!

Re: Speed loss.

Sounds about right. That pertains to ANY weight added to string or limbs as well...including the weight of the string itself.

Re: String Silencers or limb savers

Any weight you add to the limbs or string -including the weight of the string itself- will reduce speed by a 1 to 3 ratio: 1 fps of speed loss for every 3 grains of added weight. One can reduce vibration with limb savers and string brakes with minimal loss f speed but the 'noise' a crossbow makes is...

Re: String cocker

Plus, being shortened one can just leave the cocker on the bow when not in use.
Never get lost or forgotten.

Re: What arrow weight do you prefer?

Depending on bow. My under 330 fps bows: 400; over 350 fps: 425.Having found that even my < 300 fps bows result in complete passthrough, I opt for a balance of enough KE and flatter trajectory to take some of the guesstimating out of my shots on game.

Re: Long Range Crossbow Hunting !

For me it's all about the hunt. If I want to kill at long range I can use a rifle or even one of my scoped handguns.

Great sling. In fact, I sling my crossbows upside down -riser end down- to make carry easier.

Re: How to see your arrows hunting?

I use two kinds of FLORESCENT vanes like flo Lime Yellow and Green, or flo Orange. They are not only more visible but glow under black light, making them easier to find. Used to crest my arrows with lacquer, fast and looks good, economical too. BUT, vanes don't stick to lacquer as well, all vanes an...

Re: the revenant

Totally enjoyed the scenery and acting as much as I disdained the unrealistic parts: shooting a ML pistol 3 times w/o reloading (on horseback); not freeing of hypothermia; walking on a busted leg; starting fires w/o any equipment, etc. Lots of gratuitous violence and killing, though, if you like tha...
