Re: Excalibur for elk

Welcome to the forum. I'd go with something in the 450 - 500 gr total weight range and a good fixed blade head. Also keep your FOC in the 17% - 20% range as that should help with penetration. My setup for bison is Easton FMJ bolts, brass insert, 100 gr head. 17% FOC. I recently just got a Montec CS ...

Re: Broadheads?

I know you are right about the BH designs....seems everyone has a new "crossbow" version of something. And I've seen other guys on other forums agreeing with you on the low flex of a bolt. They are certainly stiffer than a verticle bow arrow, but my experience still tells me they flex. Oth...

Re: Broadheads?

[quote="sumner4991 Having straight shafts are a must. I also make sure the broadhead/arrow combination passes a spin test. This includes making sure the tip of the broadhead isn't cut off center. Simply spin the arrow and make sure there is no wobble. If that's what you mean when you mention tu...

Re: Broadheads?

Trial and error is always the fun way. I can get just about any broadhead to fly "just like field points". Most of today's broadheads are built to tolerances that allow for good flight, mainly because of the high speeds of todays bows. Most of the mechanicals work just like they are suppo...

Re: Broadheads?

I have not personally shot the Excal BHs, but have heard nothing but good things. My opinion is that a fixed blade that hits where you are aiming means you have a very well tuned arrow, and as such will maximize energy at impact (penetration). You will get good accuracy out of mechanicals, but your ...

Re: 125g vs 150g Broadheads

The Firebolt with a 125gr head weighs about 390 gr. The Phoenix advertises 305fps for a 350 gr arrow Subtract 1 fps for every 5 grains of weight , means you should be shooting a 390 gr arrow about 297fps. That equals about 76 ft-lbs of energy at 0 yds. This setup should be around 279 fps at 30 yards...

Welcome to the forum...I'd echo gerald's comments. I've heard of no complaints about teh SMF rail. Personally, I like the Al, though.

Here is a good link with alot of info on feathers. I'm thinking of trying the Rayzrs - mostly because I think they look cool.

Re: FLETCHING DISTANCE

The physics of the matter dictate that the farther away the vanes are from the center of gravity of the arrow (balance point) the easier it will be for the fletchings to stabilize the arrow. If you shoot mechanicals you will likely never notice anything. But you will see a difference with larger fix...

Re: arizona e z helical

I was just messing around today with junk I had in the "archery box". Took some 4" quick spin vanes and cut them down to match some QS 3" crossbow Quick fletch vanes I had. Then I mounted them on a 20" bolt, (AZ EZ fletch with RH 4 deg offset) but I moved them back as far as...

Re: Why FOC is only part of the story

FOC also plays a part in penetration. When an arrow hits it's target, it flexes at teh balance point. Higher FOC moves ther balance point forward meaning a shorter distance between tip and balance point, meaning less flex, meaning less wasted energy. Also, a heavier arrow, although it starts slower,...

Re: Phoenix for Moose

I would guess the Phoenix with a Boo string will do just fine on a moose. I have a Vortex and been working on a setup for bison and came up with a 535 grain arrow using Easton FMJ bolts, a brass insert and a 100 grain fixed BH. With a flemish string I expect 295fps with that and to keep 96% of that ...

Re: Firebolts made for 150gr. broadheads?????

A 150 gr head with a Firebolt just gives you a higher FOC than a 100 gr head will. You can shoot Firebolts with 100 gr heads from your Excal as they exceed the 350 grain minumum. Never shhot an arrow that weighs less than 350 grains from an Excal.

FOC Measurement

How do you measure FOC, and what % are you looking for?
This link describes 2 methods.

http://archeryreport.com/calculators.html

I am using method 1. Seems to me the arrow will flex at impact and not the BH.
Haven't compared the two. Probably should have.
