Speaking of shotguns, did you know that when you cut off a shotgun shell at the brass, pound it into a wooden post with a mallet, then strike the primer with a nail, the primer explodes and framents of the primer are propelled - with force - through the thumb and finger that held the nail? I didn't....

First make sure your bow is rock solid (as are you) and bow isn't resting on something hard that would cause deflection from recoil...which becomes more apparent at increased distances.
