They are down low in the heavy and thick evergreens where the snow is not as deep and it is easier to browse. They are out of the wind and ice pellets as well. The thaw will bring them out once the snow depth drops.

tracer, The key is moisture. Hands and feet produce huge amounts of mositure. The hard part of that is that after the moisture is expelled from the hands and feet it changes form. The moisture cool and condenses in your boots or tight fitting waterproof mitts or gloves. I am an entire season hunter....
