my brother and I flushed a covey of quail about an hour before daylight this past spring walking in to turkey hunt... that got the old heart rate up too!

I am pretty much similar to Grizz. I have 3 and do not shoot them like I used to. I make sure they are on the money and practice a month or so before season starts. It gets me in the woods earlier but I do most of my hunting with a gun.

sometimes down here one might relate jumping deer to flushing quail. they flush just as close and the time of shot opportunity is sometimes even shorter, making buckshot the goto load!

Grizz ,I hope you get a swamp monster with that scatter gun!

I have done so successfully. I like to have a little cover in front if possible , like a low hanging limb, golden rod ect. If you are still and quiet you just may be amazed what walks so close , up wind of course. I used to also knarl up some pine twigs for a natural cover scent too. Go get a bigun!
