one heck of an opening day

Friday I was on leave as planned a month before. Morning dark found me in Lanark ready to open the season alone, since my buddy had to work. I walked into the appointed bush through sparse brush and a high overhead canopy, found my log and hunkered in behind it. The southwest wind was perfect. For t...

lantern for finding blood trails

In a post by Hi5, the guys were talking about lights for detecting blood trails in the dark. Hi5 says his Ultra Violet light does not work, and Davehawk says: "Hi5's good story, Now for the blood trailing. Get a Coleman Lantren. The one with the mantels that burn fuel. Hold it high and the bloo...

Ray,

Good to hear you had a heart thumpin' time out there. Anticipation, determination, suspense, surprise, excitement, and satisfaction all in the space of a few minutes. You gotta love it. Now you can start looking forward to the next time.

If you want to knock off those pesky grouse without making too much noise, get a pellet gun. Light, QUIET, and effective. Scoped if you want so you can hit a beer cap at 20 yards. As long as it's not running.

Yup, I still have about 15 pounds left, and a few sausages from a nice doe. We had some last weekend and it still tintilates the taste buds. Shortly marinated in PC Caesar salad dressing and onto the hot grill. When I get the cut and wrapped (bones-in) meat back from the butcher, I vacuum seal it in...

Dunrobin, Like many others, my first deer was dressed "by the book", literally. Not having anyone to show me in the field, and hoping for the miracle of a successful hunt, I read my illustrated chapter on "how-to dress a deer" a hundred times. It was a kind of Time-Life style boo...

Today I heard that due to our NAFTA (North American Free Trade) agreement with the omnipotent US of A, we will probably loose our control over harvesting anyhow. They are claiming they should have many of the same hunting rights in Canada that we do. That goes for Canadian guided bear, some native r...

Smitty, It's a winning situation. Either one would be good. I shoot an Exomag and it's more bow than I really need. When I got mine, I thought, what the heck, go for the biggest. Well, ya can't cock it by hand unless you have really strong fingers and back, and it shoots fast enough to knock your so...

Woody, I thought reindeer were old world (Asaia, Europe) and caribou are a new new world (North American) species. There are different races of caribou, some big, some really small. Reindeer are very docile and lend themselves to being penned and easily handled. No so caribou. As ornery as an ex wif...
