My son, my best friend

Patrick and I went out for the very last time yesterday to close out the 2006 deer season. Although I enjoyed a successful season he had yet to have the opportunity at harvesting a deer. Under the Ontario apprentiship program and after completing all necessary courses we would take stands together a...

Re: Second rut

When should the second rut hit this area? I'm guessing any time now. Man I hate Mondays. It's a whole five days until the weekend again :x . I counted at least a dozen scrapes on my property yesterday. There was also rubs to be found and fresh deer tracks everywhere. The intent was to do a hunt thi...

Nothing but bucks in our area this year. Very odd! Most of the hunt camps in the area report harvesting mostly bucks of all sizes but very few does.

Although I hunt equally morning and evening I prefer tracking and gutting a deer in the daylight hours. Less chance of getting injured and besides their is something to be said about popping open a cold brewskie at 9:00 am to celebrate EH!

The bulk of the deer I have harvested were taken between the magical hours of 7:00 to 7:30 am. I can't even begin to count the times I have bumped deer in the dark on my way to the stand in the early morning before sunrise and these are the ones I have seen. So, the new tactic is at the first minute...

"Is she a yearling doe, Grizzly? "

She is a fair size but young. I would have to say that she was born in the spring of this year based on her behaviour, but no older than the spring of 2005.

Well, that doe jumped in front of me again this morning in the backyard at 10 yards distance in my pine forest while I was getting firewood with my ATV. I was still wearing my clothing that I used to process the buck. Now I'm getting really nervous  :o I'm stripping down, throwing my coverall...
