A disoriented deer was killed Tuesday after it entered a Fredericksburg residence and began ramming its head into the walls.
City police spokesman Jim Shelhorse said police began receiving calls about 5 p.m. regarding a deer that was running onto porches in the 600 and 700 blocks of Lafayette Boulevard.
Police caught up with the deer in the garage area of a home in the 600 block of nearby Wolfe Street, Shelhorse said. It was not clear whether the deer forced its way into the garage or entered through an open door.
Police thought they had the deer trapped in the garage when it jumped through two layers of drywall into the resident's bedroom, Shelhorse said.
Inside the bedroom, he said, the deer was disoriented, bleeding and ramming its head into walls in an apparent attempt to escape.
After a short while, Shelhorse said officers decided to shoot the animal.
"It was in bad, bad shape and was in obvious distress," Shelhorse said. "It needed to be put down."
Shelhorse said he didn't know if the use of stun gun was considered, but he said that in general such weapons don't work well inside homes because they cause the animal to go extra wild before going down.
He said that might have led to extensive damage to the home or injury to a person.
Shelhorse said he didn't know how much damage the deer caused in Tuesday's incident or whether the resident, identified as Sidney Knight, was home at the time.
