Stands

I keep two stands out , about 100 yds. apart. I always have them around twenty feet up. I hunt the stands acording to the Animal patterns, and where I feel they will be most active the next time out.

two stands

Post by rutman »

Hi
20ft. is probably about average of the stands I have to. I like having a couple stands fairly close togeather as well. It's nice to beable to hunt with a buddy and be close enough to hear the shot but not close enough to decrease chance of success.

I have used tree stands before where we hunt at about 12 feet in height and this was with rifles. This year after getting a 240 lb. buck in a blind that I constructed one of my boys deceided it would be better for him to hunt there and gave me the boot, so I made another blind 200 yds. away and connected with a 160 lb. buck on the last morning of the hunt. This year will be the first year hunting with a crossbow ( phoenix) and i will use this same blind as i feel more comfortable on the ground. Both of these locations were on ridges that gave me approx 10 feet in height over the ravine that the deer use as a trail.

That sounds awesome! I am interested in blinds as well. I probably got about 1/3 of all my archery deer from laying on my belly on the field edge. The whim factor is awesome, you can instantly go where the deer were the night before without making any noise putting up a stand.

Bye the way congrats on the step to xbow hunting. It has been the #1 most exciting reason for living for me for 20yrs. The fact that you can share it with your son is even better. An old fart I have for a friend started me on it because his son isn't the hunt type. He, to this day has no idea of the value of the gift.

Since I hunt in a suburban swamp, I have two up a little obe 100 yds a part. I am adding a third which will also be a little over 100 yds from the other two, giving me a triangle in this swamp and I'll be able to hunt from anyone of the three depending on the deer movement and wind. This set will also give me stand location in all the travel corridors I've found this year with snow on the ground and the water has frozen preventing the deer from traveling through it.

I just started putting some stands up for other than prevailing winds. December is usually my most productive month. 2005 had nothing but south winds that screwed me over on all nine of my locations. This will not happen again!

I personally love the hang on style of tree stands. I have two homemade ones and can move them after a morning hunt and sit in them that evening. I shot a doe last year out of one of these stands. It was late season and the deer had began to yard up. I found a well beaten trail with fresh sign, so I moved my stand one evening. The next morning I had 7 deer come down that trail and I got a double lung shot on the lead one. I like the removable tree steps too. They don't hurt the tree and won't destroy a chain saw years from now like a spike will.
I hunt for memories, the meat's a bonus!
