target point vs broadheads
I have been sighting in my new phoenix crossbow with the standard points supplied with the kit supplied with the bow. I am using a piece of 36 inch solid styrofoam as a target. I was amazed to find that the bolts would bury right up to the flights. I have too questions to ask? 1 Will the broadheads or the flights be damaged by penetrating too far into the target or by trying to pull them out. 2 Should one sight in with broadheads and compensate with target points to avoid adjusting scope.
First thing is, what are your fletching. Veins will stand up alot better then feathers being buried that deep into the target. Feathers Will breakdown faster taking that much abuse. A suggestion for you would be to take a large bag and stuff it full (packed tightly with plastic shopping bags) and place in front or behind the target that you already have. This is to make a higher resistance for the arrow, stopping the arrow sooner.
About shooting with the hunting heads. I would only shoot them enough to determine if they group well enough to use as a hunting head. Target practice with the target heads after you determine what head you will use for hunting. Now if your hunting head has a different point of impact then your target heads, before you go hunting, resight the bow for the hunting head.

This could and probably will give you bad habits in your shooting. Always practice with the sights that you will hunt with. This will familiarize you with everything with the bow.Should one sight in with broad heads and compensate with target points to avoid adjusting scope.

styrofoam has got to go get you a xbow target . there is alot of choice out there.. and yes your fletching will bend and distort from buryin into the target..it wont hurt your broadhead other than dull it a bit..sight in with field tips and your broadheads will be right on...I would even shoot the broadhead you intend to hunt with to make sure then resharpen..these xbows are amazingly accurate my friend...enjoy...black martin wrote:I have been sighting in my new phoenix crossbow with the standard points supplied with the kit supplied with the bow. I too use a feed bag stuffed really tight with shopping bags. It stops my field points off my Exocet and they only go in 4-6 inches at 20 yards.
If you are using the plastic vanes and they are warped just hold them over a steaming kettle for a few seconds and they will straighten right out.
