Gun Registry Update.

Post by A.W »

Federal gov't planning a gun amnesty: CTV
CTV.ca News Staff

The Conservative government plans to gut the gun registry by granting an amnesty to rifle and shotgun owners, CTV News had learned.

As a result, the registry would only apply to handguns and automatic weapons.

The government is also expected to waive a $60 fee that more than 1.5 million Canadians must pay this year to renew their firearms registrations.

The possible changes thrill hunting and sport-shooting enthusiasts, who have hated the gun registry since its inception.

"It's something we've been crying out for for 10 years," said Tony Bernardo of the Canadian Shooting Sports Association.

"The Firearms Act has been an expensive and intrusive sinkhole. It whisks away precious tax dollars from programs that really need them."

Created in 1995, the gun registry soared in costs for a host of reasons. A 2002 report by the auditor-general found it had cost the feds $1 billion.

That's the best new's I've heard from the federal government in a long time. Now let's reduce taxes so the working man can enjoy the finer things in life. When's the registration burning party at Parliament Hill?.

I hope that the registry is scrapped soon but this news article doesn't really say anything:

The Conservative government plans to gut the gun registry by granting an amnesty to rifle and shotgun owners, CTV News had learned.
- this implies that we will be able to add unregistered guns to the registry with out penalty, not that registration is not required

As a result, the registry would only apply to handguns and automatic weapons.
- there has "always" (70's?) been a registry for restricted weapons; the amnesty does not mean any change to that policy.

The government is also expected to waive a $60 fee that more than 1.5 million Canadians must pay this year to renew their firearms registrations.
- the $60 is not for renewing firearms registrations it is for renewing your POL which has nothing to do with the gun registry.

I think this new clip was written on a slow news day...

I wouldn't get your lighters out yet guys. Harper is going to have a mountian of opposition on this one. The NDP and Liberals love the registry, hate gun and hate Harper. The fact that he holds only a minority gov't will make this a tough one to push through.

fudster,

You must carry your registration card(s) with you. Nothing has changed yet, so I wouldn't leave them at home. I laminated all mine and carry them in my wallet.

Ecoaster it will depend on what officer you meet up with but ......... lamimated registration cards are altered cards, therefore they are not legal. This law has nothing to do with trying to make people safer, just to harrass legal hunters.

"Automatic weapons"??

Is this true or did the newspaper writer screw up (as they usually do) by misnaming a SEMI-AUTOMATIC as an AUTOMATIC?

The newspaper screwed up w.r.t "automatic". What they should have stated is that restricted weapons will have to be registered (still). The definition for "restricted" is very well defined and is not limited to hand guns and "automatics".

Also, handguns classified as antiques (manufactured before 1898) are not considered to be restricted. Therefore to state that handguns have to be registered is incorrect.

Automatics (not semi's) are prohibited - which means that you cannot have them (some exceptions to the rule but basically they are not part of the registry issues).

I think the article was written by a reporter who did not know anything about the registry and he based it on a comment from a politician who did not know anything about the registry.

Here is a better article...

Stephen Harper To Replace Gun Registry With Coat Hanger Registry
June 08 , 2004

Stephen Harper promised to replace the failed federal gun registry with a new and less expensive coat hanger registry if his party is successful in forming the next government in Canada.

During a news briefing broadcast on all the major Canadian news networks, Harper told reporters that once his government makes changes to the Canadian Charter of Rights, "eliminating a woman's right to choose abortion", the "coat hanger" will become the single most "dangerous" threat to human life in the country.

Although Harper was sketchy on details pertaining to how the new coat hanger registry would work, he did hint at the possibility of using the number tags dry cleaners attach to the clothing as a starting point.

The move has infuriated women's rights groups from coast to coast to coast, however, the news of an even bigger backlash from rural Canadians took Harper and the Conservative Party by surprise.

It kills me that we are suppose to be happy that there scrapping the registry. We payed twice as much as people that didn,t own guns for a project that shouldn,t even been considered as a smart idea.I will be happy that the registry failed, but i will always be upset at the fact that we had to go thru this and the waste of money and time that was spent on it.
