My first shot of the season and a bummer!!

Post by Orion »

I shot a doe @ 35 yards approx first one close enough this season so far and, she got startled right when I squeezed off the shot, some body riding in the woods!! Any how I hit her she rolled and got up, I waited 45 min went to the area seen her get up and run some, and of course its raining getting dark, I ve looked for 2 hrs since its dark and pouring rain hope I can find her in the morning I must have hit her back in rib cage as she turned to where noise from quads: probably gut shot this is first deer that didnt drop in her tracks in awhile!! Sure makes me mad!!

I've read that your wildlife department in Pa provide a deer finding service. They use dogs of various breeds mostly Daucshonds (Spl)i donot know what they charge but the dogs are suppose to be very good.

Found her!!!!

Post by Orion »

I found her this morning around 11, 114 lbs, took her to a buddy of mine for processing as I had to go to work/ hope she's ok I gutted her she smelled alright to me so I took her to my buddy to skin and get her cleaned up better. and in a cooler. Entrance point at intestinal area lucked out and missed stomach. This is first year I have used slick tricks you guys recommended and what a hole they make, some of her intestines were hanging out and the exit hole was about the size of a 2golf balls! I found her about 60 yards in some cutdown trees and golden rods still no
sign of blood @ impact area or trail to where she ended up at. She must have laid there a while till she expired. I feel pretty lucky finding her just hope meat isn't spoiled shouldnt be it was 35 degrees last night and raining like crazy, and about 40 degrees when I found her. My Black Lab actually found her!!! Thanks for the help and encouragement.

You made the correct choise of backing off and looking in the morning. If you would have continued last night you may have pushed her into the next county and would have never found her. Great work on your part.CONGRATS!!
