First Crossbow Deer - 8pt & Doe
A couple of Saturdays ago I harvested an 8 pt and a doe. The conditions were perfect and I was hunting a saddle and saw a total of 16 deer that morning. I took the 7th doe that came by. She was a mature doe and dropped after 50 downhill yards. The wind was coming from the right direction and it was almost like I was invisible that morning. About 30 minutes after my first shot, one of the largest buck I have seen passed just out of range. A few minutes later I heard a lot of racket coming up from behind and it was a group of 5 buck. The group consisted of a spike, a couple of 4 pts and small rack 8pt and a nice 8pt point. Of course, the nice 8pt was the last to come in range. I took my shot and it dropped after about 35 yards. What amazed me was the other bucks were not affected by the shot. The small rack 8pt and one of the 4pts spared not more than 15 yards from my stand. The group finally wandered off after 15 minutes.
I have rifle hunted for 25 years and now that my youngest kids are in college and out of fall sports, I took up crossbow hunting this year. I have many more options to hunt in the Nashville area using a crossbow than I ever had with a rifle. My experience on that Saturday morning was on a ridge near other homes in an area that does not allow gun hunting.
My Exomax has been the best experience I have had with any hunting equipment. I owe note of thanks to the regulars on this forum that have shared their collective experience. The tuition is high when you have to learn on your own. This has been a great fall.
