Where to go in Ontario?

Post by filsonman »

Hello Good People!

I am sitting waiting for a tow truck to unlock my running car so I can go to work and thought I would take the time to write my first post on this forum. I live in Southeast Michigan and, as you may know, crossbows are legal if you have a qualifying handicap and also may be used during the regular firearm deer season. You folks look like you have a ton of fun so I put one on the old Chritmas list and should be up and running soon. I have access to land in SO Ohio and would like to hunt in Ontario as well. I spent my summers in Leamington and have hunted moose and fished extensively in Canada and would like to hunt white tails there. Any suggestions for areas within a 6-10 hour drive of metro Detroit? On a side note keep up the good work in promoting your sport and hunting in general.

Regards,
Kirk

Unfortunately sir there is no non-resident season for archery in the south-west of ontario . There is however northside of georgian bay or east of toronto . Sorry but as you know things can change from one year to the next .

Thanks for the info. I will have to print and read the regs. A little bit further drive is no big deal.

You think they'll change the crossbow law in Michigan any time soon Filsonman? I didn't know crossbows were legal there during firearm season.

HUNT IN ONTARIO

Post by BOB VANDRISH »

All kinds of open seasons for archery for non residents in Eastern Ontario.
The areas start just east on Toronto, and go right to the border with Quebec.
You are talking within that 6-10 hour drive window that you were looking for.
One point to note-you are restricted to antlered deer only.

Forgot to add that you can also hunt on Sundays.
Check the Regs for more details.

Ben,
I do not think it will happen anytime soon. It seems crossbows in MI are just as controversial as anything else and there are many divisions within the hunting community. I think that anything that we can do to encourage hunter participation is a good thing, unfortunately most people are too shortsighted to look at the big picture. THe MI Bear Hunters Association recently sued the State to stop them from opening a trapping season for Bobcat in the Lower Peninsula. Their ultimate reasoning was that it would be less opportunity for them to run their dogs. This shows you how quirky things can be here. I can hear the screams from other hunting segments should the DNR attempt to make crossbows legal. Many hunters are worried that their opportunities to harvest a nice buck will be diminished should a season open, however with the two buck licenses currently available, most antlered deer are shot before they are 2 years old. I think the first thing that would have to happen is to eliminate the second buck and increase the quality of the herd, then it might be possible to get some other groups such as the Michigan Bowhunters Associate and Commemorative BUcks of Michigan to jump on board. But, there is always hope.

Bob,
Thanks for the Info. I'm not concerned about killing a flathead, I have shot plenty, I just want to go for the experience of it all and maybe score a nice big Northern Bruiser.

Bob,
Any areas that come into mind specifically? As far as near city "x" or in county "Y". Just as general area to start my search and planning for next year.
thanks,
kirk
