Where did all the deer go in 86A

Post by Fox »

I was out last weekend in 86A near Stratford Ontario and I know it is hard to pickup fresh tracks but it seems like most of the deer are gone. Now the first week of Dec is the shotgun hunt there and we got 3 but they cannot all be gone. Anyone else hunt in that area? This is up near Gads Hill.

Hoping to fill my bow tag before the end of the year.

Not sure about that, but I haven't seen any deer around here in over two weeks either. :?
I still have one tag to fill yet, getting a little worried, just a little.

I would say 2 things are causing it.

1. Huge coyote population this year. Unreal in some areas.

2. The MNR has upped the number of tags in most areas for the past 3 years. There is no way that people shooting 2,3,4,5 or 6 plus deer a year can't be having an effect. Most hunters took 1-2 a year or the equivilant of that many per person in a gang. Now in some areas, each hunter can take 3-7 deer depeding on where they hunt. Not to mention, the surplus tags were for does so in effect for the last 3 years, people have been taking extra does and the possible spring fawns with them. Remove a buck, and one deer is taken out of the system. Remove a doe and the potential is that 2 to 3 deer have been removed.

this is my first year hunting, so i don't know what other years have been like, i hunt 86B south of stratford, near st.marys. I 've seen deer all year, except for the last few weeks i've been out. I haven't been skunked either, i guess i've had a few chances. I missed a 6 point in late oct. i'm finding it hard to see any right now though?

seem to be lots here

I hunt 91, there seems to be a fair number here. I see them probably every other outing. Took a nice big doe on Saturday, she was travelling in a group of 7 to and from the cornfield. They seem to bedding down in the hothorns. I have not seen any bucks in well over a month.

To "buck the trend" (he he), I have still been seeing deer. They've grouped up more now that the heavy rut is done. Saw 9 does/fawns together two weeks ago, then saw 3 does and two bucks (6 and 8 point) travelling together last Saturday.

As for that "doe theory", I NEED to take some does from my bush...I took a six point out of it already, in the first week of Nov..and he was WORN. Too many does for him to work, and he was just a little guy! When you see a group of 9 together, that's too many for a 50 acre plot.

Don't fret, boys....there is still quite a few around...excess tags or not.
