Winter storage of excalibur crossbows
In his book: Crossbow Hunting by William Hovey Smith (which by the way has Bill T. on the cover) he states that "crossbows should not be stored in in foam or cloth cases as the moisture held by these cases will tend to rust any ferrous components and oxidize aluminum, particularly if any residues are present from exposure to salt or brakish water."
I bought a compound bow base to transport my phoenix. It has a foam
liner. Should I be concerned or is it alright to store it in this type of case
all winter? If not what do people use or suggest for winter--off season--
storage?
MJS.

Mine is on a rack in my home office as well. I like to have it out - reminds me of my time in the woods and makes the "anticipation" for the next time that much sweeter.
I will say this - I had a Mathews Conquest compound that I left in a bow case for about a year and a half and it rusted a lot of the components. Moisture is the root of all evil when it comes to storage and leaving it out can keep that issue from ever being a problem. If you have to store it, I recommend some of those moisture packs that a lot of items are shipped with. Put a few in the case and it should help with that problem if you are in a humid climate.

The rack or even just a bow hanger for the stirrup is probably the best way to store it. I live in a high humidity area and I never store bows, guns, or anything else that moisture can damage in a closed case. I have taken a gun from the cabinet, placed it in a case, put the case in my truck and driven to the hunting area to open the case and find the gun was wet! Direct sunlight hitting the case evidently condensed the moisture into water droplets inside the case? I have to transport them in a case, but I am very careful to keep it out of the sunlight. I usually keep the case in the bed of my truck under the toolbox for shade and air circulation now.
Much better to store them in the open air, or if that's not practical in a very large gun cabinet. Even then it's a good idea to check them regularly.

Hang mine in a looked Big Storage Room I made for Weapons.
Check all Weapons regularly for anything, plus I like to play with them during off seasons, and in between practice or Target shooting.

Many thanks to all for sharing their experience in this matter. I think
I will use my gun cabinet instead of a bow case for now.

Sure is.. My brother in law gave it to me, said he only shot it about 20 times.. I shot it about the same.
It's when I went to buy a string for it that I came across the Excalibur.. Turned out to be an expensive string..
I just seen you were in Woodstock, bet my last doller you know the guy who gave me that crossbow..

It's hard to say if I know him or not as I do know a lot of people here in town.
If you are interested we are having a get together from the Ontario Hunting Lodge/Ontario Trophy Bucks websites at Cutchie's on Devonshire Ave. January 27th.
Let me know & I can give you a few more details.
I have been thinking of posting it on here as well, maybe I will do that & have all 3 sites represented there.
