In many areas of Ontario you are not allowed to use a gun on Sundays.I go out for the weekend I use my Shotgun on saturday and my Exomax on sunday.wabi wrote:Just thought I'd add my 2¢ to the discussion. I've never specifically hunted turkey with my crossbow. I have hunted during the late archery-only season for turkey, but I was really after deer. If a turkey had come past I'd have arrowed it though. I carried the same broadheads I use for deer. The ones I have found to be very accurate and have great cutting ability. The only difference between my deer arrow and my turkey arrows is the addition of the Zwickey "Scorpio" to the arrow. The scorpio is easy to add as described in a previous post, and in the testing I've done with it does not change the flight characteristics of the arrow at hunting ranges.
As far as spring turkey hunting the shotgun gets the call. That decision is a result of my personal definition of ethics. I will use the legal method that offers me the best chance of making a quick clean kill with the least chance of wounding and loosing the game I'm hunting. Not trying to start a debate on that subject, but I'm not going to use a method that is possibly less efficient just to be able to say I've killed one that way. In the late archery-only season the crossbow is the best choice for me, but in the spring the shotgun gives me the best chance. I'm not criticizing anyone who hunts them with their crossbow, and I'm not calling them unethical, I'm simply saying for me, the shotgun (when legal) is the method I feel is best.
I attended a seminar at the Toronto sportsman show where the guy (Rocky Crawford)recommended using the biggest mechanical brodheads you can get.His were 21/4"or 21/2".His theory being if you miss the vitals by a little,He is still dead.
I forgoed the shotgun for this coming year. Last year I gunned a jake and bowed a gobbler. This year I want to guillotine one and zwickey one. Bows are more fun in my oppinion and your hunting buddies never know whether you scored or not until they meet you at the truck.
I believe that a turkey load for a shotgun has no advantage on a bow because the second shot is usually in vein anyway. Every time I've heard the second shot so far it proved to be an empty handed hunter.
