Cancer causing fishing equip.

Post by chris4570 »

I just purchased a reel yesterday and on the box there was a sticker stating: "Warning: This product contains a chemical known in the State of California to cause cancer and other birth defects and other reproductive harm."

Not sure how serious or likely the chances of the reel doing harm are, but did send an email to the company for more information regarding this issue.

Just don't go fishing in California and you'll be fine.
I beleive the super - dangerous toxic material is brass. Same warning on most of the water faucets I install. Brass, I believe, contains a small amount of lead.

You know they had a recall on the Barbie fishing rods at Canadian Tire because the paint had lead in it. Brass does contain lead like as stated before because its an alloy so its not going to be pure like iron or gold for instance.

I kind of figured there was some miniscule amount of something carcinagic(sp?) within the makeup of the reel. I was thinking maybe even the oil or grease used.

It would probably have to be ingested in large quantities to have any negative impact.

Oh well, I am not going to give up fishing anytime soon.

I have an ounce of touch up paint for my Honda from the dealership and it has the exact same warning on the label.
