Digger, I was given the spinal epidural and was awake during the operation it took about a hour and a half, I could not see but when the doc would beat the new knee in place it would jar me a lot.
My sister that works in the operating room says the hammer they use

Good luck Digger. Had both of my knees replaced March 27th, 2006. Best thing I ever did. You will be up and around in no time. The operation is the easy part. Wait until the Physical Therapist gets ahold of you!!!! We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
