Back from Cuba w/pics

Post by chris4570 »

This was my first vacation, outside of hunting, as an adult. First time on a plane. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although there were times when I longed to be back home.

It may take awhile to bring all the pics here. Hopefully it's not too many, and you will enjoy them.

First morning. My bro in-law fishing from the beach. There is a reef out in front and off to his left. A one minute walk from our rooms. Perfect!!
Image

My first fish. I believe it is a cubera snapper. Not big but he was very tastey. The guys at the beach bar cooked him up for me. You can't see it but when this pic was taken I was bleeding pretty good from my ankle. I had fallen and the reef proved to be more than sharp.
Image

I got hooked on these as my evening drink. "Miami Vice" pina colada over strawberry daquiri. I can't tell you what I had as my day drink because there were too many!!!
Image

Found this little guy on the beach. He was nice enough not to pinch me while I carried him back to take his pic.
Image

This one was a biggun.
Image

While snorkelling we had seen a big cuda, which I had on momentarily before he cut the bait fish in half! Incredible! I saw this guy as well while snorkelling, ten feet from shore. I grabbed my rod, made a cast, watched him follow and hit the bait as I sped up my retrieve. Not very big but exciting nonetheless. My first cuda!
Image

My ankle two days after cutting it. It is infected, swollen and very painful to walk on. Went to the Dr. on the resort who had my begging her to stop as she cleaned the wound. I had never felt so much pain. Mutha F*****!!! At least there was no shortage of rum! :D
Image

There was one stormy day that kept us from fishing. The surf was crashing pretty good on the rocks.
Image

The morning after the storm the waves were still crashing and the tide was high. Albiet painful to stand in the salt water I fished anyways. And was rewarded. I hooked this guy 20 feet from shore. Unbelievable fight! These fish are super strong. I think the name is pargu, a type of snapper (I found this out after I released it  ). That morning my bro in-law and I both lost big fish afterwards.
Image

The next day the ocean was calm. My fiance, and I used one of the paddle-boats. I was trolling when I got a hit. I got up on the back deck. The fish was strong and making some good runs. I saw it was a big cuda! With no wire leader I thought for sure I would lose him. He wasn't about to give up! He made several good runs. After about ten minutes I asked my fiance to bring us to shore so I could land him. The cuda kept fighting although was clearly getting tired. We made the 300 yards back to shore, where there were 50 people gathered. I jumped out, on my good ankle, my bro in-law tailed him, and I was thrilled!! People were clapping and taking pics.
Image

A kiss before the release.
Image

We hooked up with a guide for the afternoon. Trolling for cuda. Trolling speed 10 knots!
Image

A simple, yet effective bait. A piece of foam tubing with a wire leader and two hooks. The cuda hit it with gusto.
Image

Not as big as the one on the beach but still a heck of a fight! Cleared the water a few times. Saw the hit.
Image

Another pargu. Smaller but still a heck of a fight. Saltwater fish are scrappy! I gave this one to the guide. I caught another the next morning, from the beach. We ate him for lunch. Very good eating.
Image

Big starfish.
Image

The last night just before going to sleep this guy crawls out from under the bed. Not big but I imagine one would notice if you stepped on him.
Image

My ankle is still swollen, but is improving. Just have to be aware of how I walk. Will tough it out and go scout the turkey tomorrow.

What is the name of the resort?

Sounds perfect. All the comforts the women like and fishing right off the beach. I could handle that.

enormous: I did bring back some cigars. Isn't it mandatory? :D

Justin: The name of the resort is Cayo Ensenachos, Royal Hideaway. The beach is great! The resort is on an island, via a 48km causeway. No locals! Only other vacationers. Food and drinks served to you on the beach. Our bungalow was a minute from the beach and a minute from the pool bar. :D :D

My fiancee and I are planning on going back for our honeymoon next June. My sis and bro in-law are also planning on going back at the same time. Hopefully we will get into some tarpon next trip.
