Painting carbon shafts

Post by Preda8or »

I'm thinking about painting the back side of a couple of my shafts to look like white wraps. I don't want to use wraps because of the extra weight. Anything I need to know about painting carbon shafts before I start. Special paint? Special prep work?

If you do a search there should be lots of info on painting bolts . Paint will add wt. as well . I have used automotive paints , and laquer from bohning with no trouble. The shaft needs to be clean and oil free . A slight bit of rubbing with some fine scotch bright and it would be paint ready.

Here ya go: http://www.texastrackers.com/Videos/Arrows.wmv He used laquer, once I tried enamel I see why. Watch the part where he ways the arrow before and after, very little weight change, less than 2 gr if I recall.

That is the way I did mine.

White lacquer with a green fluorescent fade.

I used Loc Tite Super Glue Gel to fasten on the Blazers.

I've never tried epoxy so I really can't answer.

what you will find is that most archers are concern with the added weight and balance of the bolt. With my experience with epoxy you will create a much thicker coating on the bolt and thickness = weight. as the video shows you only end up adding 1 gram to the bolt with laquer.

Andre, think you meant one grain vs one gram. The beauty of using laquer is that it comes off in seconds w/ acetone. Mine have held up fine w/ laquer, just need to remove it to refletch. Woodies are prettier, lol.

You will get some rub marks on the paint on the shaft where it rides down the rail.

The paint does hold up well otherwise.

OK I painted a couple of shafts with rustoleum white lacquer spray and I am wondering how long I should wait to fletch them?

I waited overnight.

I used the LocTite Super Glue Gel from Walmart.

About $1.99.

Much cheaper than the "arrow fletching stuff"..
