ground or treestand

Post by franklarabie »

Just wondering if most people hunt for whitetailed deer from a stand or the ground... ive setup the stand. It seams your quite limited in the location(s) you can use and it's always risky sitting in those. what type of area should I set it up in if its better. Presently im setup in a pine tree overlooking lightly flodded swamp and havent seen anything there but theirs lots of tracks in it.Image

I have 2 tree stands set-up, only hunted from 1 of them (1 night) so far. Have yet to take a deer from a tree. I always end up sitting against a big tree off of a deer trail somewhere. Taken all my deer this way.

You forgot to add:
E. - All of the above.

Right now where I hunt we have 4 ladder stands, 1 hang-on stand & climbing stick, 1 permanent ground blind (wood with roof & windows), and 2 semi-permanent pop-up blinds, and several "natural" blinds. I also have another pop-up blind for portability, a climbing stand, and seat & portable ground blind (camo netting & stakes roll-up type blind).
The locations that are "hot" today may be abandoned tomorrow. As the weather, rut, and crop harvests change, so do the deer's patterns.
I have a few spots that I can hunt all season (like the feeder), but even it gets hit hard at times and very little at others.

I always use tree stands. I have three set up in different spots in the same area. Wind direction, time of day, rut, all dictate which stand to use.

I have atrees stand that I use frequently, and a ground blind at a 1/4 kilometer fron the stand for use when there is change in wind direction.
99% of my harvest are from my treestand.

If you hunt hardwoods, you can't beat a climbing stand. Great for one time sits in new areas. It's the equivalent of "running and gunning" of tournament fisherman :D .

I vote for E. Every situation calls for different tactics. I do what I feel will work the best for the terrain and the deers pattern. I do spend most of my time on the ground though.

Well said and I second that sentiment.

HOWEVER, when I take my son out, I'll be using a ground blind (he's 9 now).

I am thinking E for me as well. I have three ground blinds and four tree stands plus a climber when needed. I have found that most of my deer are taken from a tree stand though.
