Getting ready to build arrows, f.o.c. question
Getting ready to build arrows, f.o.c. question
I have built arrows for the last 20 years and always had about 10% foc with carbon arrows for my vert. bows. I have been researching here and read how some people feel higher foc is better. I ordered the beman shafts (I used the first ones they came out with 15 yrs ago that had outserts and were super thin and switched to the ICS when they came out). If I set up the arrows with factory componets it looks like my foc will be 11.4% with blazer vanes. The nocks weigh 37 grains. I have a lathe and milling machine at work and I can mill the nocks down and probally improve the foc if needed. Is 11.4% foc ok or should it be more?

If you read through the history of preferences for FOC on this site, you will find that most go with 11-15% FOC,specifically for broadheads.
I personally like to be close to 15%
Have you considered plastic nocks?
They are around 8-12 grains, and you can always cut them shorter if you want less rear end weight.
Putting a bit more up front in a heavier broadhead should resolve your concerns.
I use 2219's and had to play around quite a bit to get fixed blade broadheads to fly the same as target points.

I agree with bstout.
I hunt when I can, the last thing I want to worry about in a rain storm is if my arrow is going to go as straight as it did yesterday in the sunshine.
Go heavy!

The rear end inserts can be cut down as well as drilled out to reduce weight and increase FOC. In the front I also epoxy a 21 gr. set screw or allen screw in 8-32 to assist up there as well.

Norm,I use short lengths of 5/16" threaded brass rod for the front end,in behind the insert.
Fits a 2219 bolt just perfect.
You push the brass in and add the insert before the glue starts to set.
You can cut any grain weight you want, and the threads help getting lots of adhesive in there.
Made quite a difference for me.
