Afternoon hunt to remember Red Label~!

Post by Sandman »

Hello all,

It seems at least once a year that R.J. and I take a stand on one of the properties that Mikey Vee use to hunt and remember our friend.

Thursday was that day and R.J. had invited me out to a property that Mikey had taken a really nice buck (his last) on just before his passing...

As I walked through the snow to my stand with Red's climber on my back I could not help but remember how some 5-6 years earlier I was as green as they come to bow hunting when R.J. introduced me to Mike.

As I climbed the tree for the evening hunt I spent a good portion of it reflecting back at the relatively short but memorable time I knew Mike....From him teaching me to use a climber, friendly target competition (Mike, R.J, and myself), to hunting in the pouring rain on December 31st~!

I am not the most religious man around but I would like to think that Mikey was watching us take part in his favorite sport. I do know that if he was I'm sure he got a chuckle out of my evening......

I was watching the field ahead of me when I spotted movement coming my way. A pair of turkeys were making their way across the field and I thought it would be a great time to try out my new Nikon D80 and get a couple of pictures (of which only one kinda turned out   )......

As I did my best impersonation of "Dusty Lenscap" I caught something to my left = a beautiful big doe about 25 yards from me looking straight at me.....I had been moving around enough to bring in a 747 to get the camera out~!  Well, she looked a little while longer and Im sure I seen her shake her head at me before she busted out of there towards R.J.~!

Later, when I met up with R.J. he told me about a big doe that he watched come through but he couldnt get her to stop as she appeared to be spooked~! We had a good laugh over it and I came to the decision that for the time being I will concentrate on my hunting first and work on the photography second~!

All in all it was a great afternoon filled with memories and thoughts of an old and dearly missed friend~!

Cheers,
Robin

I've seen many people here mention Red Label in the past so I would assume he was a member of this forum. Perhaps a bit of a history for those of us who are newer to the forum would be nice. Seemed like a well respected guy...

Although I never personally met or hunted with Mikey he was truly a good friend of mine.

Yes, two folks from totally different backgrounds and countries can become good friends via the internet and especially great forums like this one..

Grown men are not supposed to cry, but I certainly did when I heard of his death. In fact I'm a little choked up right now.

He is gone, but certainly not forgotten.

RIP, Red Label.. we will all see you some day..

Thanks for the post Sandman. I never met Red Label, but I think about him when I am out hunting. He is what I consider one of the originals, the ones who were already members before I joined. He was the first to introduce himself.

PS. Glad to see you back!!! You're one of those originals!!!

Woody:

I think it is a sign of a true friend as I too felt it difficult to swallow a number of times while in my stand reflecting back~!

And, I also believe that we will meet again....Red Label has just gone on ahead to scout out areas for us~!

Thanx guys for sharing your stories with guys like me who have just recently become a member and do not know Red remember one of the most important parts of hunting, and that is the friendships that we make and sometimes take for granted in this great sport.
