I use one for varmint hunting, and sometimes with my crossbow.. It comes from Wallmart and doubles as a uni-pod for a camera, or chrony. Costs about $20 and is adjustable from about 10" to about 5.5'. I will try to find a link for it.
Here is a link to one my son and I made for our .22's, works great!

I saw one one an African hunting show that wasn't just a set of crossed sticks but had three legs making a tripod. Very sturdy looking.

I always use a shooting stick when hunting with a rifle, and since the crossbow is shot like a rifle, I use a shooting stick when hunting with it. The percentage of solid hits is dramatically higher than when shooting offhand.
I used to use a stick that doubled as a flounder gig ... a 1.5" hardwood shaft with a 12" long, 1/2" diameter steel spike sharpened to a point ... on stand I'd just shove it into the ground and use my hand as an adjustable rifle rest. Works wonders. indeed, it was a formidable weapon in and of itself.
Now I have an adjustable unipod from Wally World, but the idea is the same.

Shooting Stick
Didn't realize they were so popular. I made one for sighting in my xbow when shooting from a chair that I made for ground blind sets. I used 2 hockey stick handles and they work great. The website that Pydpiper referred to has ideas that I think are useful.

Glad this topic came up...I was just thinking about this the other day. A month ago I picked up a new Varmint Riffle and also got a Harris Bipod for it. Its adjustable from either a prone possition to nealing or sitting and I was thinking on the weekend while out calling yotes that this thing would work great on the xbow come turkey hunting. Mine is an S-Model which swivels and gives alot more adjustabilty to the setup. Its also easy to put on and off as it just fastens to the sling mounts that are already on our bows.

I lost the use of my right arm earlier this year, so when it came time to do some shooting I grabbed two hockey sticks and cut the blades off. This setup worked very well for me however they are a bit awkward to carry into a blind. They do wonders in the backyard for sighting in your bow. Cost is nothing and about three minutes to make even for a one armed guy. If guys are looking to make one of these and don't have the hockey sticks, just go by your local hockey arena and see the staff. There are always a number of broken hockey sticks lying around.

Have you considered a clip to attach it to your clothing or a belt during transit? Or even a lanyard to swing it over a shoulder?
That Steddy Eddy posted by Digger looks like it may be right up your alley.
Hockey sticks are a great idea too, the laminated wood would be very sturdy.
