tuskntine - , in Ontario we have to take a one day safty coruse befor we can purchase a turkey licience , it is a very easy course just really a seminar on safe hunting for turkey , like dont wear red , white & blue in the bush to hunt turkeys , you could acually sleep through the seminar and still pass the test at the end , if you have passed your hunting licience then you will have no probs with the turkey test , very easy.
Turkey Course
London Dave:
Congratulations on a successful course.
I don't know if there is much of a failure but I think it is a good exposure to some of the things one should know about turkeys. I think the biggest asset is the fact about head/neck shots --- not body. I know of an incident where a shot was pumped at a turkey at close range. On the first shot of 2 rapid ones, it was hit solidly in the body and then the head/neck for the kill. In picking, it revealed no pellets penetrated the body, they were tinkling out of the feathers. I know at the outset of the turkey seasons being opened I felt that a 12 ga at close range would do the job and wing or leg crippling would get you a bird, however that apparently is not the case when you see them run and fly.
Good luck!

I enjoyed it and found it very informative. Rocky Crawford was one of the speakers which made in more enjoyable for the fact that he hunts them with bow only.
Someone asked about taking a shot if the bird took to wing and the other speaker (Bill ?? from Port Elgin) said don't even bother because you'll never take one down.

Turkey Course
LondonDave:
At this point I cannot get enthused about archery hunting for turkey. Even though the turkeys that I have shot have all been close range, I still like the "bang and the dead bird". Maybe I will change my mind in the future but for now I think I will stick with the Browning 12ga A5. Since I just got the mag 20 ga A5, I may give it a try.
Are you planning on trying archery this spring?

bbbwb,
I hear what you're saying about the thrill of the bang you're dead. I'd like to try both archery and gun. Maybe start out with the xbow and see how that goes and then possibly switch to the gun. Between Riley and I we only have 2 tags (because he's only 15 he still comes under by bag limit) and we are going to want to shoot one each. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. The fall hunt is looking like it's going to happen so maybe we'll wait and try and get one with the bow then.

Brantford turkey seminar
London Dave : I was at that seminar, good deal! I'm planning on hunting turkey with the crossbow. I'm going to use my wasp cam lock broad heads with a wire attachment behind the head. The Bow shop in Kitchener suggested this method. I use Aluminumn 2117 arrows. Ray.
