Dry-fired and now have a splinter on my limb!!

Post by paulslund »

Well...I did it. I accidentally dry-fired my bow last December in my garage when I was attempting to uncock it (my fingers were apparently too cold to hang on to the string). My buddy has since given me the low-down on how to use the rope cocking aid to uncock (wish I had gotten that tid bit three weeks earlier).

I've inspected my limbs when cocked, at rest and without the string, and I appear to have a "splinter" on one of my limbs. I can't tell if it's the limb itself, or just in the colorfusion camo (it's not black underneath the splinter itself, but it is on the stock where the splinter has come off). Luckily, I haven't found any cracks.

I'd like to send it to Excal to have a look, but no one at customer service has responded to my email. Does anyone know where/who at Excal to send in your limbs for inspection? Has anyone had this happen to them?

Thanks a lot,
Paul.

Give a call to Dan Miller. He's the Excal Guru for everything..... I dry fired my Max last summer and didn't notice any splinters until November when I was out in Ohio deer hunting. It was a small splinter but I didn't know what it may do if I shot the bow again.. Fortunately it was the last day of my hunt so I stopped by Dans shop on my way home to have him look at it.... As he peeled a splinter across the face of the limb he said "I hope you didn't quit hunting just because of this. These limbs will take a lot of punishment and still shoot". Of course it's best to have an expert tell you that, rather than figuring it out on your own... Anyway, he dropped everything he was doing and replaced the limbs right there and then..No charge..... In all honesty I can't say enough good things about Dan Miller. He is absolutely the best... Contact him about your bow...

Peter has been busy with the shows and is the person who does handle the e-mails there . If you do have a splinter this is the time of year to get it repaired .

When my Exocet splintered I was told by Dan M. that if it was a surface splinter (top layer) and it was no bigger than around than a toothpick, then hunt/use the bow until you had the time to send it back. My Parker did the the same thing and was told by Parker that it was a problem with the final coat of laminate (not sure of technical terms). The off season is the time to get it fixed though.

Welcome to the dry fire club PaulsLund.
There are two kinds of people here, those who have and those who will dry fire.
I was doing chrono testing and got into a rythum but then missed a beat and didn't put an arrow on the bow.My boo string saved me.

Just to clear things up; Dan Millar is customer rep for the US, while Peter (Excalibur Marketing Dude) is for Canada.

Peter is away at shows for the time being. Best thing to do is to call the above toll free number. I'm sure at least a secretary will pick up, and let you know the best time to call back, or what course of action to take.

Just thank your lucky stars it was an Excalibur. if you are honest about how it happened; you will get new limbs for free. (you pay shipping)

Since Ottawas is probably too far to drive to Kitchener; they will probably have you mail in your cracked limbs. they will then match your camo as well as possible, and mail you back some brand new ones.

Although.... When I needed new limbs I made the 45 minute drive to Kitchener. It was an AWESOME experience! the entire staff is VERY kind. Peter is such a great guy. The mounts they have in their office are unbelievable. I got to meet Dusty (Bills Hunting dog) and saw both Bill and Kathy busy doing some work.

Only one of my limbs broke, but peter insisted on changing both to keep the camo matching. He also noticed my scope rings were getting a little loose, so he fastened them down with some loctite.

What a GREAT company. For me the drive was only 45 mins; but it would have been worth a much longer drive. If you have anyone in the area to stay with; I would recommend making the hike down.

Try giving Al;s corner store a call. They are near Arnprior. Also try Gobble "N" Grunt on the Gilles side road a call. They both deal with Excalibur. Both of these people will be at the Carp sportsman show on April 11th 12th and 13th of April 2008.

the only thing to do is take the limbs and riser off and send them to kitchener and let them be the judge.if there is a problem they will fix it but they have to see it inthe flesh.the turn around time is quick.once you have had a dry fire the pressure is off,the guys that have never had one are the guys who have to worry.

Thanks everyone for the replies and the PM's. I will try calling this week. If it's a busy time, I imagine the email may have gotten missed (it's not like I haven't done that in my own job).

This is the first time I dry-fired while trying to uncock the bow. I'm also a little concerned that the limbs may have hit the garage floor on the dry-fire (or at least one) but I don't think I've noticed any marks on the end. I've dry-fired my previous bow once while sitting in...I haven't done that since.

I had a fast flight flemish string on at the time...I think I'm supposed to toss it now, is that right? Hmmm...maybe an excuse to get a boo string...silver lining...needed to find one...

Happy Easter everyone. :D

Does it look like this?

That was on New Year's Day when I took my pads off for the season. No dry fire, I'm not sure when it happened, maybe on my last shot on December 26th? Anyway I'm not going to replace it just yet; I was told it is the top layer and will be fine.

Hey paul just explain what happened to Peter and they will replace the limbs you pay postage, it cost me 10.65 yes I did it too.
Partikle I would get yours replaced too just in case, the limbs are under quite a bit of stress when cocked and stay that way for quite some time while waiting for bucky to show up.

Yes that was what happened to mine too only one limb broke the other one was perfect but I would hate for it to bust while it is cocked, also just for piece of mind.

Are all the limbs the same? Is my Exomax limb the exact same as the Exocet limb?

You're getting me worrked here Fletch. Maybe I'll contact Peter for a replacement after all.
