Fox pup pics

Post by xbowking »

Today pinkpanther (Paul) & me were driving driving along when we spotted a red fox with pups just off the side of the road just a couple yards, the mother moved back into the bush a bit and the pups came back out of the den and posed for some pics.

I am up to my elbows in baby animals right now, I love them all!
A couple weeks ago I was crow hunting, sat down between two mounds of dirt to wait. A couple minutes later I heard little growls and the next thing I knew there were 5 of these little things crawling all over me.

What are you doing with them Pydpiper? Can you keep an animal like that or are you trying to get them to go out and learn to look after themselves?

Depends on their breed, squirrels are nearly impossible to separate from their mothers, so no concern there. Coons are kept with the mothers, I usually cage the mother then scoop up the kits and move them all together. In the odd event that the pups are orphaned in a chimney or wall I either pass them on to a rehabilitator who will raise them correctly and are licensed to do so. Other times, I will blend a small batch of kits in to another mother when I move her, believe it or not she will take on a new kit, even of a different age, very cool to watch.
I too am capable of raising orphaned animals, my wife and I did a tremendous amount for a while, that is how I got started in this business. Now with kids of our own and my job we simply don't have the time to do it right.
Domesticating, or attempting to domesticate them is not a good idea, but it gets done, a lot. I hear a lot of stories.

The neighbour at my moms cottage had a baby racoon he raised. The thing would sit on his shoulder whenever he walked around while it was still small. It had free rain to walk around in the woods but would always return "home" each day. The second summer it wondered off and did not return much until the fall for his bed. I'm not sure what happened to him after that?

We raised a pet coon once, had her for a couple years. She too could come and go at her leisure, open the back door, come in grab a loaf of bread from the only cupboard she was allowed to use, then take it outside.
We would be entertaining on the back deck, she would stroll out of the trees and sit beside me, grab my beer roll on her back and drink it.
I came home from work one day, she was in the spam with my wife, she turned and looked at me, all the hair on her back stood up and she growled. That was her last day in the house, she hung around outside for a long time. Unless you get them fixed, which is wrong to do, they will eventually do what raccoons do best, be a raccoon. :D

We used to have a very large Rottweiler here with us, I once brought a box of 5 baby raccoons home to rehabilitate, when I set the box on the floor the dog sniffed it a few times, circled the box of crying coons then plucked them out one at a time brought them to her bed and nursed them through the entire nursing period, she wouldn't let anyone near those pups! People would drive by our house, wife would be cutting the grass, big ol' Rotweiler following her and 5 raccoon pups following her. A real traffic stopper.

Maybe she was getting protective of your wife? The way the dog wouldn't let anyone near the pups?

Good Luck with the big old racoon you're trying to catch. She sounds too smart for a trap. You might have to sit up all night and just block the hole after you see her leave. My sister had one in her attic, caught it and drove it 30km out of town. A few days later it was back!!!
