in ontario,does a bow have to be in a case to transport it?

chessy is correct, you do not need to encase any bow or non-restricted firearm for transport. If you are a place that normally contains wildlife the law is to have it encased 1/2 hour before sunrise, and 1/2 hour after sunset.
You can have your crossbow fully cocked on the passenger seat and be perfectly legal, provided of course there is no arrow in it. I do that quite often running between hunting sites.
