I would have though that in the quarter bore you'd use something with a higher sectional density.(shows you what I know!) I bet that some of the 223s with 62+ grainers give you a run for the money.
Where does one find a range where you can shoot 500+ yards?

I have a heavy barrel custom varmint rifle in 243 although it hasn't been used in a number of years. About all I can recall is using 4064 with 75 or 78 grainers. Just out of interest could you tell us what is your trajectory at 800 yards? Was there mirage to contend with?
We go down to Reno every spring and shoot the long distance matches down there. 500 yds with 30 cal and 1000 yds with 50 cal. Did fairly well this year. 7 inch group @ 1000 yds.

Sunset there was some mirage but we had 6-12 mph winds so it was being blown away . As for drop at a 300 zero I`m adding 19moa which equates to about 160 inches of drop .
