Dry Fire

Post by bow hunter »

Been hunting with an xbow since 1991. I have never dry fired my bow before. Last week while taking a few practice shots, I cocked the bow, carefully sighted in and let a perfect shot go, except for one thing. I forgot to load in a bolt. I thought the bow made a different noise when I shot and I looked down range to see where my arrow hit. At first I thoght I had missed the target completely, then after a few seconds, the dreaded phrase crosssed my mind. Oh crap, I just dry fired. I inspected thouroughly for damage and couldn't find any. Continued to shoot without any problems. Wow that was too close for comfort. Can't believe I forgot to insert a bolt. It must be an age thing.

Can happen to anyone. Not a fun experience. I got some nice blood blisters out of my dry fire, when the string whiped off and caught my knuckles.
I hunt for memories, the meat's a bonus!

I haven't admitted mine till now. I had my first two weekends ago while doing final preseason checks. It threw the string about 50 feet to my left. I began to think I would never find it.

No damage done. Restrung to the proper brace height and proceeded to drill a plastic bottle cap at 30 yards with my next shot.

Priceless.

And I actually INHALED once. No shame in a DF, just proves that we who do it shoot a lot....sometimes after happy hour.

I was so CERTAIN it would never happen to me, but last year it did. I'm certified member of the DF CLUB. Looks like I'm in good company though.
