This just in, from the latest Scuppernong Reminder:

UPI Network
Columbia, NC

A local potato farmer from the North Carolina coastal plain's Tyrrell
County spotted this hairy creature exiting a pickup in a remote area
several weeks ago, and snapped a quick picture with a digital camera he
keeps in his tractor. "I like to take snapshots of the wildlife around
here," he said in an interview, "but I never expected to capture
anything like this. It's just strange. I almost got the tractor in the
canal when I saw it. It really spooked me. I'm not going out there
again. I'll send the help to do it."

A primatologist from the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro stated upon
examining the photograph that this may well be a genuine picture of the
region's fabled "Skunk Ape" or "Swamp Gorilla," a mythical creature
thought to be an eastern version of Sasquatch, the "Bigfoot" of western
fame. "It's definitely a hominid of gigantic proportions," said John
Woodhall, director of the Primate House at NC Zoo. " It has the same
massive bulk, overhanging brow and cone-shaped head we've come to
expect when examining photographs of unknown bipeds."

Experts conjecture that the creature may have emerged from the adjacent
Hollow Ground Swamp, a primeval wilderness area that is part of the
expansive Pocosin Lakes National WIldlife Refuge system. The swamp
adjoins the creature's lair, and it is thought that perhaps this
strange hominid was able to leave it's wild life behind and learn to
fraternize with the people of "Down East" Carolina. "There's not a lot
of population pressure to deal with in the area," said Rufus Cahoon,
another local farmer. "I think the thing just keeps mostly to itself,
and is able to blend in because it wears clothes now, and mimics human
activities and all. Besides, it has a human wife. I saw her once. I
don't know whether it stole her away from her people or she stays with
it voluntarily, but I know she lives with it. I saw them together
through my rifle scope last year when I was bear hunting out there."

In an interview with BreAnne Klossey of Primates Today, John Woodhall
said, "I think it's obvious that the creature is evolving in front of
our eyes. We've been watching it from a distance, and it's not like
other non-human primates. It's not just a tool-user, it's a tool-maker.
I've seen it confront problem situations and adapt the materials at
hand to use in solving the problem ... it obviously thinks, though I
don't think it is human, by any stretch of the description. We may very
well have the long sought-after "MIssing Link" here. If only Richard
Leakey could see this thing!"

Some locals are not so sure. "Shucks, it ain't no Bigfoot," said Alton
Ainsley of the Cross Landing community, in another part of the county.
"He's human--he just ain't from around here. He's misunderstood. People
are afraid of him. I think he's just a loner who likes it out there at
the old Jess Cooper farm. John Brown it, he's not so different from us.
These news people just want to make a buck off of this."

Perhaps. But you have to wonder ... especially when the sun drops
behind the cypress and gum trees and the swamp comes alive again. Are
all of it's creatures present ... or has one come among us? Indeed,
the picture is worth a thousand words.

I was just saying the same thing to a friend the other day.

I'll play armchair industry analyst and guess that Middleton probably stole more market share from brands like Tenpoint or Horton that he did from Excal. I think most Excal buyers have already made up their minds before they enter the store.

I was in Burlington this morning and though I'd stop by his place of business to see if there was any indication of what was going on. Turns out the address from his website (1235 Fairview, Unit 142) is just a mail box in a mall UPS store.

The guy in the UPS store did tell me the mailbox was still active.

Saw them in a dealer for the first time today - Simcoe. Was told he liked them better then Excalibur.

Also read:

"There will always be bad reviews from some that are obviously not a Middleton fan etc. Middleton crossbows placed there 3 shooters last year in the top 10 at the Canadians placing 1st, 7th, and 10th. Excal did not place and Horton was 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Middleton never worked for Excalibur whatsoever and the owner Derrick is always coming out with new technology that will be on the cutting edge of technology. As for speed Middleton's are the fastest crossbow on the market using the same arrow weight and shaft length per testing. The stryker is using a much shorter shaft in order to claim the fastest crossbow on the market. You must compare apples with apples in order to make such a claim. I have been selling Middleton since they came on the market and Middleton's are doing extremely well, the service is great, and Middletons have a lifetime warranty. Presently the Middleton Crossbow is either leading or in second place in the Triple Crown with one more shoot left the 3rd leg which I believe will be held in Bancroft. This past weekend Middleton Crossbow won the shoot in Newmarket the 2nd Leg of the Triple Crown.

Hopefully this info is of help and shortly Derrick will be releasing further developments on his Middleton Crossbows in the very near future. My wife and I both shoot Middleton Crossbows and we extremely pleased with the results that we are obtaining."

Personally I was not too happy with the fit and finish.

The guy at Eli's also told he had a defect in many bows that went out - resulted in cut strings. Apparently Derrick went to all the dealers and personally replaced them with new parts immediately.

Still like my ExoMax. Never had a problem.

Eli's in Simcoe doesn't like the bow better, he likes the margin better.
There is another Middleton dealer in Woodstock, it's a garage business. His name is Brad Ingold, the one who competes with the Middelton mentioned above. Seems the dealers want to forget that Ingolds Middelton blew up in his hands during the shoot and he finished it with a borrowed Excalibur, and won.
Apparently Brad Ingold is a pretty wicked shot regardless of what bow he is holding.

I went into a shop in Hamilton last night and saw a middleton on the bench. The dude claimed it was way better than excal's. He said that it shot way faster and that excalibur fudged their speed ratings. The bow looked like an excalibur but thinner and cheaper looking limbs, and a stock that looked like it was made of toothpicks. Its too bad that middleton had to steal a well made design from excal, cheapen it up, and than try to pawn it off as something thats better than the tried and true original. This really pssed me off. How much is middleton paying salespeople to push their crap? no one can reasonably push a middleton as better than a 'bur

Mike P wrote:Due to a recent ad I placed here at the forum I was contacted by Mr. Middleton and have been placed on a retainer to write a speech titled "It seemed like a good idea at the time!"

Payment for said services are now in the hands of my literary agent, the honorable Mr. awshucks, and consists of twelve dozen brand new Excal, errrrr, Middleton crossbows still in the original packaging.

Keep an eye peeled in the trading post section later this month for "Mike & Aw's September Sucker Sale" for outrageous discounts on the above mentioned merchandise. And as if that were not enough, awshucks has graciously offered the first ten crossbow buyers a free hardcover and signed copy of Griz's latest best seller "My Secret Life with Margaret Thatcher" featuring the famous bedroom scene with the forward riser language. (Warning, this is the "Uncut" release and the content may not be suitable for some of the younger forum members.)
Geez, Mike, I missed this one for over a month. Explains the rotten fruit in my mail. Better check yours.
