Thumb Thwackers UPDATE

Post by Sopchoppy »

Other than still lookin' short and ugly, thumb is getting much better. Now down to just gause pad and big bandaid. Can actually stand for something to touch it. No longer sore, just tender where the string made contact on the side. Next progress step is buttoning a shirt. Guys and gals just remember, "KEEP 'EM DOWN!!!

Just wondering, how many will fess up to whacking their thumb with the string? I got mine Friday the 10th. Still don't know how I did it. It wasn't pretty either. Took off about 3/8" of my thumb down to the middle of the nail. I could see the tip of the bone. Jumped in the car, drove to my Dr.'s office. He said "you need more than I can do". Back in the car, drove to the emergency room. I have a friend from church who is an orthopedic surgeon and was on call at the hospital. After xrays, to the operating room we go. I woke up 3 hrs. later. He had to shave the end of the thumb bone down to get a flap of skin to fold over the end and "trim" the buggered up end of my thumb. Saturday and Sunday were beyond painfull. Had some good drugs that helped. Went back today for a look-see. It's healing well and looks better than I expected but it's still ugly. All this happened the day before I had a hunting trip in Florida planned. I've got a Crankaroo ordered because it will be some time before I can pull to cock. I tell you all the GROSS details in hopes it might keep one of you from the pain. I am thinking of ways to put some kind of bumper or padding at the top of the stock where my hand supports the bow just in case. I haven't got the Dr. or hospital bills yet, but it will be enough to buy several Excaliburs.

Like the man said, "It will feel good when it quits hurting!"

Yes, I've whacked my thumb once. Hopefully that is enough of a lesson.

I feel for you. Hope you heal fast. You'll like the crankaroo. Works great.
Keep smiling!

My son and I had a good laugh when we listened to that part of the video. Somehow, that advice did stick with me so far. Thanks for the reminder.

Sopchoppy, your description may save someone else from doing the same thing, or, maybe even a dry fire. Good for you for admitting your mistake. That takes strength of character.

It's all about respect for the tool.....and paying attention. A reminder is good for everyone. Thanks, and I hope your thumb gets better quickly.

did mine 3 years ago but like a real man i did not make a sound (wanted to just did,t because i missed a deer at 8 yards it hit so hard the deer took one bound and stopped.and i thought i could reload the bow no chance ) ithink the blood dripping out of the tree on the dry leaves is what finally scared the deer away. i suffered all winter with that finger but think that should be the last time that happens

Its very painfull just reading your post. Sorry to hear that. When I got my first Excalibur in 1992 I was told to keep my thumb down or else it was going to hurt BIG. That stuck in my mind since then.

I wacked mine, it has to be at least 2 months or more ago. When I rub my thumb it's still tingles. If I rub my arm between my wrist and elbow, my thumb tingles. Probably did some nerve damage and I'm hoping it gets better with time. Hopefully yours will get better with time too. It's hard to explain to someone that's never had it happen.

I hope that Boo string is OK! I hope you heal quickly too . . .that sucks.

I have not done that one, a benefit of having small hands. :)

I did my forefinger while shooting off a rest - OW OW OW OW OW!!! Insanely painful. I was afraid it was broken. Now I'm paranoid when I shoot from a rest.
