Cold Sweat

Post by Bayou Stalker »

Maybe you northerners can help a coonass out. Last weekend it got real cold down here, 38 degrees to be exact. How do you keep from buiding up sweat when carrying your gear and climber a mile into the woods? Short of starting out in shorts and a t-shirt and freezing for the first half of the walk, any tips?

Actually, Stalker, you've got the right idea. Here in the coastal plain of East Carolina, our temps aren't all that much different from yours. Chilly enough to warrant a jacket or coveralls if you ain't movin' ... but get to moving, and, well, you know. It is best to dress "underwarm" on the way in, and to put your warm duds on in the stand. :D

I think you should start with a thin synthetic layer to wick away moisture to delay build up of sweat against your skin as well as what the others said. Keep in mind your head gets rid of a major amount of heat so loose the hat first.

Don't forget your feet

After walking all that way you feet will sweat as well. I always take an additional pair of socks (and a plastic seal bag) to change out at the stand. Nothing will make you feel colder than your feet if the temp stays down and they are damp (even with good wicking socks).

Don't laugh, but I use antiperspirant on my feet to help keep them dry. I find I get very cold in most waterproof boots. I also use descenting powder on my hands and in my gloves.

I always wear polypropelene undershirts - makes a huge difference. When it gets cold, cotton isn't your friend. Usually layer with fleece, with a wind proof, water resistant outer layer.

When I first started hunting I really hussled to make sure I wasn't slowing the guys down when we were walking to our stands and I'd get to my stand soaked in sweat. I have since learned to enjoy the walk out at a more leisurely pace and to carry additional layers in my pack instead of wearing them.

When it's really cold I use the 12 hr heat packs stuck to my polypro undershirt and hand heaters. Wonderful things!

@ 38 most Canadians feel quite comfortable; not even getting a sweater out.- shorts and tee shirt are on!

To not break a sweat most times I walk slower taking alot of breaks.

I walk really slowly to my stand, and wear everything I plan to wear for the day. I like taking my time on the way in, I see and listen to all the small game in the woods.

With regards to sweat, I am kinda lucky in that I find anything below 21ºC to be cold, so I usually don't even sweat a in the dead of summer. Must be my body type, I guess :)

I do pack an extra sweater to layer on, and sometimes a face mask. Like a bunch of other guys, I drive in only my base layer, but I crank up the heat in the car, and dread jumping out and getting dressed outside. I wish I had a full size van to get changed in the back of. A nice 80's Ford Econoline complete with a bed, insulated walls and wood like panels. A traveling hunting cabin. Sorry, wrong post this is one of the things I think of while in the stand...
Take it easy.

Once the temps dip I also layer my socks - a lighter liner sock to wick the moisture (something in poly/lycra) and a heaver wool blend sock over it. Works well. I do have to put boot dryers in my boots every night - sometimes I'll have to change my boots 1/2 through the day. Whatever it takes to stay warm & dry! :D

I also pack all of my clothing in normally wearing just a t-shirt in. It's cold at first but with the weight on your back it does not take long to warm up on the walk in~!
