nice deer! that must have been a great time getting him back through the swamp! He's pretty clean, how did you manage that?
There are some huge scrapes where we were, in the fresh snow, but one of the guys in our group has no scent control at all. Smokes in his treestand, on the way to the stand, slams car doors etc... No chance of seeing him on the prowl during the day.
Next year during archery though!
Congrats!

I cleaned him up with snow, stuck the tongue back in the mouth and made him presentable for the pictures. Leaves work well in early season. It only takes a minute but makes all the difference in the world on camera.
Luckily I did not have to drag him through the route I took to get in. there is a trail that we could get a small farm tractor to within a couple hundred yards of the deer. that said, the couple hundred yards was a dirty haul. The reason I don't use that trail to get into my stand is with the wind I need to hunt that tree, my scent would be blowing into their bedding area as I walked in. Like I said before, a lot of work went into this deer and I tried not to cut any corners and risk tipping them off. If that meant slugging it out in the crap, then that is what I had to do. made the harvest that much more satisfying.
Bring on the giants now!

We did not have a chance to weigh him dressed or live. It took a fair amount of work to get him out of the bush. Had to dress, haul and then truck him to Guelph. By the time I had the cavity real nice and clean, we were hungry so we took the tenderloins out, cooked em up, had a cigar and a drink. By that time it was 10:30 and I was exhausted coming off the back end of the adrenalin rush and all the work.
The cape weighed a ton. he has a beautiful heavy hide with a great colour to it. No throatpatch though. Alot of the deer on that property have that trait.

i try not to think about my avatar while out hunting. be just the sort of think that would cause a fellow to fall out of a tree.
