got a doe today! PICS ADDED

Post by ch312 »

so we had some fresh snow yesterday and i decided to walk around the bush for a bit to see where the deer were hanging out.

75 yards away from my truck i look up on the side of the hill and theres a massive deer. could not see the head but it was a big buck or huge doe. so i figure great, busted already. so i slowly walked away and then turned around and its gone already. then i noticed something to my right running right at me...wtf? theres a small doe running and passes by about 35 yards away.

so i tracked her for about 125 yards (took 45 minutes or so as i was going very slow) until i got to the top of a hill and saw her about 30 yards away. very thick stuff so i knelt down and waited for a clear shot. a few minutes later she laid down and i waited for 30-40 minutes. when she got up she knew something was up and started walking straight away.

so i go out into the cut corn to cut her off, but she was moving faster than i thought. she was already sitting where i planned to head into the bush so of course she took off.

so i started tracking yet again and came upon some bigger tracks that are fresh so i figured ill work a new deer. about 150 yards later i was poking along and noticed movement to my left. 2 does walking right at me! so i took a knee and waited for them to come over the ridge but they were a little closer than i thought they would be. they were 20 yards away at this point and starting to get a little jittery as the wind was going right towards them.

i had the crosshairs on the leader the whole time and 10 minutes pass before i have a clear shot at about 16 yards. figured id wait for a better shot as she was nearly facing me head on. then she started doing their little bobble head thing they do when they are trying to figure something out and then starts stomping. there was zero cover between us.

at 12 yards she was quartering towards me and i let her have it. nailed her right in the shoulder but i still saw fletching. great, stuck in bone. she made some huge leaps down the steep hill, slipped on the ice a couple times, and then tipped over about 50-60 yards from where she was hit. not a single drop of blood until i got to her and then there was a pool of it.

the carbon bolt with 4 blade slick trick went right through the right front shoulder, got both lungs and the heart, went through a rib and then the hide on the opposite side stopped it. the bolt broke in half and we never did find the fletched end.

my shot was not the most preferable angle but i figured it would have to punch through the shoulder being that close. ended up being a perfect shot.

this was the first time ive tried still hunting with my crossbow and its awesome. being scent free was key in even getting close to deer today as the wind was in their favor the whole time. i also had an earth scent wafer on my hat.

i dont usually believe in stuff like this, but my grandfather passed away recently and left me his turkey hunting vest. today was my first time wearing it and ive never had any luck like this. i kindly thanked him after the shot

pics will be up tonight or tomorrow

thanks :D

i cant email pics from my blackberry to the computer so i cant post pics. working on a solution for this now.

when you guys do see the pics, you will notice how fat she was. there was a good inch of pure fat pretty much on her whole body, minus the legs and most of the neck. good to see they are well fed around here
