I have a long piece of 3 inch abs pipe as above but made a metal tray (or any plastic bowl or tray) below and cut a 1 inch high piece by 2 inch long out off the bottom of the pipe.
when the feed gets as high as the hole it will stop. Then you can top up the pipe. Hope this helps.

I made a "10 minute game feeder" like the one shown above. Then I coated it with olive-drab Krylon spray paint. Its working great (other than the fact that the deer never show up when I'm there  .

Tip: Tie it firmly to the trunk at the top, bottom and a couple of points in between. The deer tend to knock it around quite a bit! I also have mine raised about a foot off the ground, to keep it out of the snow.

I'm going to have to replace mine next year. I put an arrow through the bottom when practicing shooting my compound from the blind  and had to shorten it about a foot to remove the damaged portion.
I've experimented with several designs and found this one works well. Unfortunately the only pic I can find is one I took in the snow yesterday, and it doesn't show the bottom.

It is simply a section of 6" lightweight plastic pipe and a 6" cap. The bottom is cut at an angle (about 30º) and the pipe is attached to the small cedar tree with a few 48" heavy duty cable ties. A 6' length of 6" pipe will hold about 50# of shelled corn. By cutting the bottom at an angle the point formed can be shoved in the ground to help keep the feeder from moving, and makes it a little more "directional" in dispersing the feed.

I made a feeder with a reducer from 4" to 2" to let the feed out at the ground a few years ago. Went to check one day and no feed at the ground? The large 4" pipe had corn in it, but it wasn't getting out????
Poked a stick in it and out came a dead squirrel - followed by a live (but disoriented) one!
I decided then on future designs I would skip skip reducing the pipe diameter.
With the 6" pipe feeder I'm using now I've seen squirrels go inside when the feeder is almost empty, but they can get back out now. I attached mine to the tree with only about a 1/2" spacer at the top - just enough to let the cap clear for easy removal.

Someone posted a novel feeder idea on here a year or so ago. It was a 5 gal plastic bucket w/ lid w/ hole in bottom and a length of dowel or broomstick handle sticking out held in place by two nails. One put some peanut butter on end of dowel and hung this thing in a tree. Deer nudge dowel about while licking pbutter and it dispenses small amounts of corn. No coon or rain damage. Never tried it but will one of these days.
