Two blade broad heads

Post by hikerman »

Does anyone shoot two broad heads rather than three of four blad heads?
How do they perform?

bstout does, and a couple others I think. I think they are a bit harder to tame than other blades, a skill I have yet to master. :?

I will be trying several this off season and heavey arrows as well.
I want to tame the Equinox beast a bit,I have all that power, why not use it and put some KE behind those arrows.

With all the larger cut options and the power to put the large cut through a large animal . . .why even consider a two blade?

If you look at the cutting diamenter coupled with the cutting surface, then it's really a "no brainer". Shooting a deer with a large cut broadhead is like shooting a deer with a small cut broadhead twice.

I don't know if maybe I'm explaining this wrong and some folks don't get it. The advantages to using a large cut blade is LARGE. Do yourself a favor and try some Stricknines or similar cut broadheads. If you get a decent hit at all, your prey falls within sight.

Disclaimer . . .I do not work for Trophy Ridge, nor do I have family that works for them. I just REALLY like the way the deer fall.

I don't know of any "real" advantage to using a 2 blade or a small cut broadhead.

Vix,

Yes they are. From the general section of the regs:

"At a minimum bolts must have a 22mm (0.87 in.) wide bolt head with at least two cutting edges that are sharp, unserrated, barbless, straight and made of steel."

I see those Crimson Talons (twisted blades) all over the place. I guess they are illegal. Thought they were gimmickie anyway and never considered buying them.

Yup.

From the Ont Regs (page 22):

Moose / Black Bear:
Crossbows must have a draw
length of at least 300 mm (11.8 in.)
and a draw weight of at least
54 kilograms (119 lb.). At a
minimum bolts must have a
22 mm (0.87 in.) wide bolt head
with at least two cutting edges
that are sharp, unserrated,
barbless, straight and made
of steel.

Deer:

Crossbows must have a draw length
of at least 300 mm (11.8 in.) and a
draw weight of at least 45 kilograms
(99.2 lb.). At a minimum bolts must
have a 22 mm (0.87 in.) wide bolt
head with at least two cutting
edges that are sharp, unserrated,
barbless, straight and made of steel.

It appears they narrowed the BH size requirement. It used to be wider than .87". I don't think I've ever seen a BH this small.

The Talon guys added the straight bleeder blades to comply with this requirement. However, seems to me like the straight bleeder blades would be working against the twisted blades once they enter the deer.

The Crimsons are very legal, if you look close at them they have 2 small "bleeder" blades, that are indeed straight.
Crimson used an email I got from the MNR to get these on the shelf of Wall Mart.

I talked to George at the bow shop today and he mentioned that he found that odd number blades fly better.

There could be a reason to use them. They would give greater penetration, if that were the major consideration.

With the power of our xbows, however, unless you were hunting something really big or thick skinned, such as Cape Buffalo, elephant, or hippos, there would be little need to reduce cut diameter in order to achieve sufficient penetration.

i put a set on new xbow. 2 blade w/2" cut Rage. flies just like a field point
and seems fool proof. But there 40$ for 3. does well and deploys every time
got em from basspro as a must buy display. even comes with a dummy b'head for target
