I have been working on a copy of the famous Relayer stock and have finally finished a walnut version. I am not a professional woodworker but had the use of a milling machine and expertise of a good friend of mine who repairs and makes fine banjo's guitars etc.
The project started in mid January and went as follows:
1. Ordered a piece of straght grained walnut in a rectangular shape that would be just larger than the relayer stock.
2. used the milling machine to channel out the section for the relayer assembly to go into.
3. Used the milling machine and drills to cut out the trigger assembly hole, the trigger hole, and then the two holes for securing the stock to the frame of the xbow.
4. Cut the general shape out of the retangular stock so that it conformed to the shape of the relayer stock.
5. Shaping: I used files (rough) and then smoother files to hand shape the stock to match the relayer stock. I then sanded the stock with progressively finer paper.
6. Finishing oil. I put six coats of oil finish on the stock over a period of 10 days and then let it dry for a complete week before finally assembling the xbow.
Now it is ready to sight in and do some hunting. Let me know your thoughts on this one.
Total cost: $60.00 for wood delivered to my house.
Tools: $50.00 I needed some files.
The joy of finally finishing this project and seeing that I could do it:
PRICELESS
I will try and post some pictures but I will put this up first so I do not lose all of my typing.
